Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Surrender message of Biafra warlords

Chidi,
The problem with these reactionaries is that they can only get off on the lies they have inherited about Biafra. Without it they flounder. For far too long, it was impossible to talk about Biafra, and the end of the war, because official Nigerian government attempted to erase Biafra from national discourse, and the Igbo just wanted to forget it and get on with their lives. But over the years those who thought Nigeria was their inheritance and that whatever else in it was their war loot based principally on the wrong triumphalist notions overreached themselves. You have watched Philip Effiong in the YouTube recording of the event in Dodan barracks. The same very short piece he read, sitting down by the way, was the same that appeared in his book published by Sungai. You do not need to go to that text just to read what Philip Effiong said. You heard him captured in video. That is proof enough. And what Philip Effiong read was no surrender statement. And surrender instruments are made of sterner stuff. It was a statement formally accepting the authority of the Federal government of Nigeria on the proviso of equal citizenship. It was neither a statement of defeat nor surrender. It was short, precise, and unambiguous, and he read it as the General administering the government of Biafra, and ended it on that note, by declaring the end of Biafra. In his own statement, Gowon goes further to accepting that the war ended formally on a NO VICTOR, NO VANQUISHED accord. That is also the principle the Biafrans agreed upon. Without that, the second phase of the war would have commenced. This is no revisionism. Achuzia is no revisionist.

General Achuzia - irrespective of any formal rank on his epaulette- led a Division. That is what makes a soldier a General. The Legion he led salutes him as their General. Period. When they unfurl their flag at his death, he will be buried as a General. That's what counts. Not the pussy-footing wangle of file pushing lubbers. These attempts to silence truth is rather elementary. Even the fellow called IBK who does not know the difference between a ditty and a poem, now calls you a poet and a wit, just to blackmail and silence you. It is the kind of left-handed compliment that should insult you. And you do have grounds to feel utterly insulted.  O ma bloody se gaaan!

IBK, the problem we are facing is that historical revisionists are now openly denying that Biafra's Major-General Philip Effiong acted on behalf of Biafra when he stood in front of General Gowon to read and sign surrender instrument of Biafra. Biafra's Colonel Joe Achuzia, who historical revisionists, has now arbitrarily promoted to a General, is their hero that single-handedly declared the civil war finished. However, under the title, SURRENDER INSTRUMENTBiafra's Major-General Philip Effiong wrote thus, "After the above incident, we continued our journey to Port Harcourt from where we flew to Lagos, arriving rather late in the night. We were eventually quartered at Ikoyi Hotel in the following rooms: L771-Effiong, L405-Obasanjo, L508-Mbanefo, M107-Patrick Okeke, M109-M.T. Mbu, M211-Ogunewe, M301-Patrick Amadi, M404-Patrick Anwunah (p. 303-304, Nigeria and Biafra - My Story By Philip Effiong)." Continuing on page 306-307 of the aforementioned book, Philip Effiong wrote, "I then shook hands with members of the Supreme Military Council and was shown by an official usher to where I stood and read MY FORMAL SURRENDER INSTRUMENT, which is reproduced hereunder for reference and historic purposes. The rank on the instrument was that of 'Major General' and my status that of 'Officer Administering the Government of the Republic of Biafra.'

I Major General Philip Effiong, Officer Administering the Government of the Republic of Biafra, now wish to make the following declaration: (a) that we affirm we are loyal Nigerian citizens and accept the authority of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria. (b) that we accept the existing administrative and political structure of the Federation of Nigeria. (c) that any future constitutional arrangement will be worked out by representatives of the people of Nigeria. (d) that the Republic of Biafra hereby ceases to exist.

I signed and dated the document '15th January 1970.' It was also witnessed by the following: Colonel David Ogunewe (Military Adviser to General Ojukwu), Brigadier Patrick Amadi (Commander 'Biafran' Army), Colonel Patrick Anwunah (Staff Officer, 'Biafran' Army), Chief Patrick Okeke (Inspector-General of Police, 'Biafra') *To see a full copy of the original document, go to Appendix 1.*"

"Those who accompanied me to Lagos but did not sign the document were Sir Louis Mbanefo -Chief Justice of 'Biafra,' and Mathew T. Mbu - Foreign Affairs Commissioner of 'Biafra.'' For Anthony Chidi Opara who wants to see Surrender Instrument, I counsel him to get a copy of Philip Effiong's book, NIGERIA & BIAFRA: MY STORY and check Appendix 1 on page 357.

CAO,

You are a respected wit and a Poet.  Do not join the delusionary brigade led by Obi Nwakanmma!  What is this 1970 and 1973 dichotomy that you introduce here again?  You amuse yourself by muddying the waters?

Cheers.

IBK

Dear all,
After all the shadow chasing(Obi Nwakanma is this, Achuzia is that), I await the Biafra surrender document.

By the way,the war ended officially in 1970 and unofficially, In 1973(in Biafra land), by which time, Obi would have been 8 years old.

CAO.
