Chidi we are ALL reader- critics whether we are professionally trained as such or not. What literary schooling does is develop what is already there.
What I was asking for is share your own take of Toyins work you assessed with others who may not be very familiar with his work and style. That opens a window into your critical mind and helps them in their own assessments.
It also demonstrates beyond doubt that you engage with the works of others and not just your own.

The unkind word was describing my refusal as "escapist".
Yes, an artist, writer, etc, can double as a critic, but that is a personal choice, not a sine qua non.
You already know what I am and that is what I want to remain, so, when I read, I read as a reader, not as a critic. This position is however enough to enable me make informed comments on the materials I read.
