Very true. The Herskovits collection at Northwestern would be my Number One choice. The Yale University Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library used to have an appreciable connection in the past but I'm not sure what its holdings are these days. Its main library (Sterling Memorial Library) used to have a huge section focusing on political figures of Africa - Awo, Zik, Nyerere, Kenyatta, etc. The University of Wisconsin's main library (Steenbock???) has an Africana librarian whose primary focus is Africa. I'm sure there are other places as well. Good luck!

I believe the Herskovits collection at Northwestern is still the largest Africana library in North America.

Dear All,
Can you please point me to institutions in the US that hold rare historical work on Africa, particularly West and East Africa?
Please note that my focus is on the US.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
