Learning Objectives:
Upon Completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define Adverse Childhood Experiences and their relationship with the social determinants health,
trauma, and health inequities.
- Select data sources that identify vulnerable populations at higher risks for Adverse Childhood
Experiences.
- Utilize prevention strategies to address Adverse Childhood Experiences.
- Identify health problems that are related to adverse childhood experiences and not easily recognizable
apart from their medical origin.
- List how adverse childhood experiences underlie many of the more difficult problems they see
each day and are related to much of the illness and chronic disease burden of the nation.

Vincent J. Felitti, M.D.:
A renowned physician and researcher, Dr. Vincent J. Felitti is one of the world's foremost experts
on childhood trauma. Leading the charge in research into how adverse childhood experiences
affect adults, he is co-principal investigator of the internationally recognized Adverse Childhood
Experiences (ACE) Study, a longterm, in-depth, analysis of over 17,000 adults.
Carol E. Nicholson, MS, MD, FAAP:
Dr. Nicholson was Director of the Pediatric Critical Care and Rehabilitation Research Program
(PCCR) at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research, National
Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD), one of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) in Bethesda, MD, retiring on May 1, 2013
Jonathan E. Sherin, M.D., Ph.D.:
Dr. Sherin, a psychiatrist and neurobiologist by trade with a wide range of professional experience,
was appointed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors as the County's Director of Mental
Health effective November 1, 2016. In this role, he leads the largest public mental health system in
the country, serving over 250,000 clients annually in the most populous and one of the most ethnically
diverse counties in the nation.
Teresa DeCrescenzo, LCSW:
Terry worked for more than four decades in the foster care and Probation systems, including developing
and delivering training modules for new DCFS hires, pioneering programs for LGBTQ youth,
and contributing numerous articles to the literature on out-of-home best practices. She is currently
completing a series of trainings in northern and southern California on treatment of foster youth
suffering from complex trauma, for the Governor's special project for underserved populations.
