A few months ago, the moderator of this list hinted that he is contemplating a project on polygamy in Africa. I was intrigued because I've often reflected on the growing demonization of traditional practices of polygamy among non-Muslim Africans. Even in Muslim regions of the continent, it appears that, among the younger generation, polygamy is receding under the weight of more secular understandings of marriage and romantic love. Now, a wealthy, young South African man has broached the subject by inviting TV cameras into his polygamous home. A reality TV show based entirely on this family is now airing on South African TV.
