Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - More Quran burning in Sweden in the name of "Freedom of Expression " 2

i'm like toyin adepoju in thinking the value of the book doesn't really lie in its material properties. and i wouldn't let the haters bait me.
on the other hand, there's lots of burning i would really mind a lot.
i recently read of the various statues and scrolls etc destroyed by the various goons during the iraq war—priceless heritage of all human kind. and the taliban destruction of the buddhist statues.
if it were a 8th century qur'an, i'd be upset; if it were an early christian relic, i'd be upset.
etc etc
the nazis burned everything jewish they could get their hands on, or sold them. i don't like that.

toyin is right: we don't want to go to war over idolatry of this or that manuscript; but we do want to give value to humanity in our veneration of objects we treasure....like, for instance, the benin bronzes, or ifa heads or yoruba masks etc. when the missionaries burned them they were the same as the foolish iraqi man in sweden who delighted in desecration of the qur'an.
i'm with anthony appiah on this: the relics of each of us are relics for all of us.

Holy Wrath 👍

Turkeye's President Erdogan reacts to the burning of a Quran outside a mosque in Sweden :

""We will eventually teach the arrogant Westerners that insulting Muslims is not freedom of thought; We will show our reaction in the strongest possible terms, until a determined victory against terrorist organizations and Islamophobia is achieved, Those who commit this crime as well as those who allow it under the guise of freedom of opinion, those who tolerate this despicable act will not be able to achieve their ambitions"

Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Affirmative Action Replacement

hi all, my point was that the  power for the president to issue executive orders is not unlimited, as this case over college loans shows.
apparently the judicial can step in if they think they have a case.

Subject: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Affirmative Action Replacement

Professor Agozino,

Apart from crying foul, what else are members of the Black Academe worldwide going to do about the US Supreme Court striking down Affirmative Action?

I imagine that there's a lot of sympathy for the current Affirmative Action policies in Nigeria, for mostly people of the (relatively speaking) educationally disadvantaged Muslim North. There are also some objections to those kinds of concessions being made in Nigeria, from various sections of the Nigerian intelligentsia, some of whom are also crying foul - that it's unfair, that they would much prefer a level playing field, the basis of their own imagined meritocracy -imagined or real…

Professor Harrow regrets that indeed lightning struck: "The supreme court just struck down biden's executive order reducing college loan repayments."

Biko, with the possible exception of legalising marijuana (your hobby horse) by "executive order",  apart from "Biden-Harris should issue an Executive Order to Replace Affirmative Action with Reparative Justice", what else should Biden-Harris do to increase the number of Black folks who could consider voting for them (for Kamala Harris a heartbeat away from the White House, assuming that BIden-Harris win re-election, thus giving Kamala Harris the possibility of becoming the first ( black?) female President of the United States  - God forbid, should her Uncle Joe accidentally trip or unexpectedly kick the bucket. With that in mind, I'm sure that Hillary Clinton is not going to vote for her, even if as dear Madeleine Albright warned," There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women"

BTW, on the race front , Joe Biden's worst nightmare could be a repeat of the ongoing nightmare playing out all over Macron's France right now, caused by the brutal gunning down at point blank range of Nahel M who never meant him any harm…

The resultant looting and destruction by the angry rioters is running into billions of euros/dollars, a lesson that the business community would like to point out to the politicians, that police brutality is always going to prove to be very costly…

Just see how peaceful we are in Sweden: Under full police protection a Godforsaken Iraqi nutter by the name of Salwan Momika burns a copy of the Holy Quran outside the main mosque in Stockholm, and nothing happens.

Doing ditto outside the main mosque in Cairo, Kano, or Sokoto (of course not under state-funded, full police protection) the miscreant would have been decapitated on the spot or translated into the hereafter in a blaze of fire….
