Dear GSAS Students,
Here's some news from the July/Aug 2010 issue of the International Educator:
Plans to Create 1000 Endowed Chairs in Africa Announced
The International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) with David Stangway, founding president of Quest University in Canada, plans to create 1000 endowed academic chairs for African universities.
Stangway was formerly president of both the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto. His proposal to create 1000 endowed chairs will cost $500 million dollars over five years.
The goal of this effort is to provide African universities with the personnel to design their own research agendas and the skilled faculty to bring them to fruition. Supporters of this effort include leaders in the United Nations, UNESCO, the World Bank, the African Development Bank and a number of associations of universities including the Association of African Universities.
