The month of August began on a jubilant mood for Nigerian football fans. Despite Nigeria's Falconets' 2-0 defeat by their German hosts after an impressive tournament at the Under-20 Women's World Cup in Germany, the Falconets finished with a Silver medal 1st August in Bielefld, Germany, becoming Africa's first female team to be so honoured.
Back home, barely three days after the attack by unknown gun men on residence of former deputy governor of Bayelsa State, Peremobowei Ebebi, residence of Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Nestor Binabo was again invaded by gun men who attempted to bomb the building, killing a security guard in the process. The attackers were however repelled by youths in the area on Monday 2nd August.
Still on Monday, after claims and counter claims over the financial state of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Chairman of the organization and business mogul, Aliko Dangote insisted that the organization is on the verge of bankruptcy while Assistant General Manager, Sola Oni debunked the allegation, maintaining that the organization's accounts were not in the red.
After about a year in self exile, former Chief Executive Office of Intercontinental Bank PLC., Erastus Akingbola voluntarily returned to the country 3rd August to answer allegations levied against him by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions (EFCC). Same day, the Federal Government withdrew the operating licence of Ondo State University of Technology (OSUTECH), Okitipupa following the institution's failure to commence academic activities two years after obtaining the certificate to operate.
Also on the 3rd, a suspected kidnapper met his waterloo while his gang attempted to kidnap a retired Army General Okoloagu. Okololagu, now receiving treatment in a hospital opted for self defence, pumping bullets into the chest of the kidnapper while the rest members of the gang escaped along Port-Harcourt express way in Abia State, South Eastern Nigeria.
After a protracted illness, traditional ruler of Osogbo, Osun State capital, Oba Iyiola Oyewole Matanmi III on 4th August passed on. Same day, the crisis rocking the Nigerian Stock Excange took a new dimension as the organization suspended its Director General, Mrs. Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke and President, Aliko Dangote.
However on the 5th, the organization announced replacement for the vacant seats, hence, former Managing Partner of Akintola Williams Deloitte, Emmanuel Ikhazoboh became the Sole Administrator while former Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Balama Manu became the Acting President.
Ahead of its National Convention scheduled for 9th August, opposition party, Action Congress, 6th August warned against violence at the convention where vital decisions shall be taken. Same Friday, the remains of the late Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Iyiola Oyewole Matanmi III were buried in Osogbo amidst tears, the late traditional ruler ascended the throne 34 years ago.
Lastly on Saturday, two people were reported killed in a renewed violence in Barkin Ladi area of Plateau State. Security operatives have had their hands full curtailing ethno-religious violence in the North Central State since 2008.
