Charlotte, NC: Falola, Bangura, and Stoller Honored at the 9th Africana Studies Conference
Eminent scholar, Dr. Toyin Falola, received UNC Charlotte's Distinguished Africana Award at the recently concluded 9th Annual Africana Studies Conference. Author and editor of more than a hundred books, Dr. Falola's exemplary contributions to Africana Studies as an author, editor of five book series, and proprietor of the USA-Africa Dialogue, were extolled at the conference.
Dr. Abdul Karim Bangura, scholar-activist and Professor of Research Methodology and Political Science at Howard University, received UNC Charlotte's Africana Ambassador Award for his engaging humanistic scholarship. Dr. Paul Stoller, Professor of Anthropology at West Chester University (PA), was also recognized with the Africana Ambassador Award for the career-long impact of his groundbreaking studies, especially on the African Diaspora merchants in the US.
The two-day conference, titled "Crossroads I: The New African Diasporas in the US," witnessed presentations by scholars and leaders of advocacy groups on a wide range of themes including capacity building and transnational networking in the global economy, innovations in identity formation and inter-cultural relations, as well as policy implications for the recent African and Caribbean immigrants. Over 450 people – scholars, students, and community members - took part in the conference.
