The Hausa/Fulani residing in Southern Kaduna yesterday said over 400 of their people died in the violence that followed the April 16 presidential elections.
In separate interviews with our correspondent and the BBC Hausa Service, the spokespersons of the Hausa/Fulani in different towns of Southern Kaduna said because of the killings they resorted to mass burials. A resident of Zonkwa told the BBC that between Wednesday and Friday last week they buried over 400 people in Zonkwa and other neighbouring communities.
"Yesterday morning (Friday) we buried over 200 people and today (Saturday) we buried more than 200. We had to resort to mass burial because of the number of people that lost their lives," the resident said.
One Alhaji Yahaya Abdullahi of Marabar Rido alleged that most of them were killed by fake soldiers, police and hired thugs from Plateau State. Malam Musa Mota, the Chief Imam of Marabar Rido, said Hausa/Fulani living at Marabar Rido lost everything in the riot. Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr John Haruna, said his command had effectively handled the issue of fake police and soldiers "and we have restored law and order now in Southern Kaduna."
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Kaduna State, DSP Aminu Lawal, said the number of people killed in Southern Kaduna was not close to 400 as alleged by the Hausa/Fulani communities.
