Joe Attueyi:

It is such a burden to be a Nigerian, honest. Honestly, some of the issues that throb me as a Nigerian are four:

- the ease with which we ignore the central issues and move to irrelevancies;
- our infinite ability to seemingly be prepared to EASILY go along with lack of excellence or outright fraud;
- our seeming lack of appreciation for how the INTEGRITY of elections are so CENTRAL for an electoral democracy to thrive;  if you don't want electoral democracy, then don't let us deceive ourselves;
- our feeling that God will bless fraud.

Take this issue of Excel spreadsheet and INEC.  Spreadsheet is spreadsheet, whether Excel or not.  When you add down a row or sum down a column, when you are adding and subtracting in a table, you are working on a spreadsheet, whether MANUAL or ELECTRONIC.  So that should not be the issue here, and we seem to be hung up of whether it should be Excel or some other spreadsheet, how much it cost, etc. etc,.

But the central issue is in Jega's disclosure viz:  that (as shown in the Table below) for two states KATSINA [Buhari's home-state; 3,126,898 registered voters (fourth largest in the country, after Lagos, Kano and Kaduna)  and the state with the second highest LGAs of 34 in number] and KANO [with the second largest number of registered voters 5,027,297 (second only to Lagos of 6,108,069) and highest number of LGAs in the country 44 ], an error in REDUCTION of the NUMBER of LGAs for these two important states was caught, which was luckily was discovered and was immediately corrected.

Should the immediate questions not come to any sane mind be as follows:  WHY JUST THESE TWO States, which were known to be the bastions of Buhari's support, and therefore likely to UNDERMINE the apparent integrity of the process?  HOW do we know that the same errors were NOT made in other local governments, and were not caught?  Does that not raise an eyebrow, that should have IMMEDIATELY caused an EXTENSIVE investigation of the ENTIRE electronic spreadsheet, for which Jega should report back to us?  I can assure you that if that were in the US, an IMMEDIATE halt in the use of that particular program (not Excel, but the VERY programmed package where the error occurred) would have been made, until everybody was satisfied that ALL LGs were properly inputed for EVERY state.

Who made the error, and why - after presumably so much money must have been paid?   Was it sabotage or with an intent to bias against the expected benefactors of the vote?   The fact that the error affected ALL political parties does not mean that it affected them EQUALLY.  A party that scored ZERO in all 44 LGs in Kano, for example, could care less whether the program acknowledged 20 LGs or 44 LGs:  zero is zero.  But if the program IGNORED  (deliberately or indeliberately) those LGs that a particular candidate scored the most on, then clearly it would be more disadvantaged than the others?

Honestly, I genuinely feel pained all that is going on, because I really want(ed) Nigeria to have good and honest elections for once - not perfect ones - but ones that we can all be proud of.  There are many elements of these particular elections that we can be proud of, but I am beginning to have more and more fears.   I genuinely believe that we are on our way, and maybe I should not be as disappointed that we did not take as much a quantum leap this time around as we should.

Finally, I know that a nation that looks askance at fraud always, that makes excuses due to "doctrines of necessity", etc., will struggle.  Nigeria will likely have to struggle for a while, I guess....

Even I struggle.  You don't know how many people write or say to me that because of my new position at Otuoke, I am tepid or not as fiery as I should be in condemning seeming fraud, much of it really unecessary and most probably un-approved.  Yet there are those who feel I am disloyal to the favored son of Otuoke in pointing out fraud.

But I will obey my conscience - while I wish him success.

There I stand. On to April 26.....

PS:  Have a good Good Friday everybody, a day when we remember Christ's crucifixion when we remember the Death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Remember that you cannot have a Resurrection without Death....who after Death went down to Hades to make the captives captive...so even without Death, he could not have done that before Resurrection, to sit at the right hand side of God to continue to plead our cause.....at least of those who believe in Him.

Emmanuel,

I keep wondering whether you guys are just ignorant or are just trying to be mischievous. Excel is a spreadsheet that is part of the Microsoft suite of programs like word, powerpoint etc. Most PCs actually come loaded with excel. A pack costs less than US$200 (yep! two hundred dollars)

You can take a printout of the spreadsheet and compare each entry against the originating data in form EC 8 and determine whether the original data was entered correctly. Since folks like you and Tony Momoh prefer adding these manually, if you guys had started on April 16 when you started receiving PU numbers from CPC agents at the Polling Units, I am sure you would have finished by now. Can you guys tell us what the correct numbers are?

Joe

 I no be Police but I listened to Buhari's statement.Buhari had alleged that the computer was programmed to favor Jonathan in tabulation of the results.Later on we heard Excel was used to collate the figures.

Jega has confirmed Excel spreadsheets were used. Inquiring minds want to know how much did INEC pay for this computer program/Excel software.
I am not talking about how excel can be used to generate fraudulent results but I just want to know how much INEC paid for this computer software or program.I smell rotten fish and Nigerians should understand where I am coming from. Jega kept demanding for billions and we need to know just how much the excel cost the INEC.

Chei!! Chei!! Dumb Jega!! Only God knows how much they bought this software :):)

Nigerians ought to know how much the INEC paid for Excel 2007 .The INEC must have paid billions  of Naira for the Excel 2007 or 2010. I smell something here.We need full disclosure but these guys are big time crooks. If INEC has been demanding billions of Naira from the FG, how much did INEC pay for this EXCEL. INEC needs to be audited....
