Through The Eyes of Our Ancestors: African Art from the James and Marjorie L. Wilson Collection
Opening Reception Date: May 19, 2011 5:00pm – 8:00pm
Exhibition runs through June 30, 2011
The QCC Art Gallery is presenting a unique collection of African art, which will concentrate on the full dress of ceremonial outfits representing Western through Central African culture. The exhibit entitled, From the Eyes of Our Ancestors: African Art from the James and Marjorie L. Wilson Collection, exposes the public to a side of African art which is not usually encountered at museums. This exhibition places the art of various African cultures nearer to its original context, where masks were only part of a larger ensemble that created a complete character, an ancestor, or a spiritual entity. Without its costume, that entity could not exist. The idea is complete, and this portrayal is intended for the better understanding of the historical context from which the object came. The show will demonstrate the true essence of African Masquerade with full body costumes that will not only emphasize on sculptural aesthetics, but the spiritual significance they embody through celebration, dance, and tradition. Obviously, the costumes are more than just works of art; these ensembles represent a continuation of tradition within some of the many hundreds of African cultures.
