USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Mr Yoruba Nation!] Riots in the North and Yoruba nation

Subject: Mr Yoruba Nation!] Riots in the North and Yoruba nation

Ogbeni Adewale Adeoye:

Nigeria is changing right before our eyes on a daily basis. The idea of separate nation states
within today's Nigeria is becoming increasingly antiquated notwithstanding the need
to preserve and venerate these entities as important milestones in the history of Nigeria.

Nations evolve with time. Some evolve through the strengthening of the bonds between
the component nationalities/ethnic groups while others have no choice but to loosen the bonds
so that they might go their separate ways.

Nigeria is once again at such cross roads.

It is now much more difficult to envision a single Yoruba nation that would be charged with
the role of looking after the interests of the Yoruba communities in different regions of Nigeria
or in foreign countries, considering the current emphasis on states of origin-a configuration that finds the Yoruba as
majority populations not only in the 6 states in the SW but also in Kwara and Kogi states?

So, even if we can imagine a cooperative venture in which all state governments  the 6 states in the SW
collaborate to look after  the interests of the Yoruba in northern Nigeria, what would happen to the
Yoruba of Kwara and Kogi states who would be facing the same issues? Should the Kwara and Kogi state
governments be looking after or repatriating only the Yoruba amongst their citizens in distant climes
preferentially without looking after the other component minority ethnic groups in these two states?

The point of the above scenario is to suggest that henceforth Nigerian issues are more likely to be settled based on
states of origin, rather than on strategies based primarily on ethnic identities. What the states cannot accomplish on their
own will be left for concerted action by the federal government. Thus rather than individual ethnic groups rescuing their own
people from dangerous situations in distant locatonsi, it would be more efficient for state governments to rescue all of their citizens (including
indigenes and non-indigenes) and irrespective of their ethnic origins from such dangerous situations. Needless to say,
only the federal government could logically mount a rescue mission for all Nigerian citizens in foreign locations, considering
her recognition as the government of a sovereign jurisdiction.

Lagos state is  the most ethnically diverse jurisdiction in Nigeria. Would it be fair to all other tax paying citizens
of Lagos state if state funds are spent primarily on evacuating or looking after only the Yoruba of Lagos state origin
(or more narrowly only the indigenes of the state-- the Omooniles) in distant climes? Would it be fair to use the resources of the state governments on the Yoruba or the Omo oniles while neglecting the interests of other Lagosians whose origins are from the SE, SS, Middle Belt or other regions of Nigeria who might be facing the same dangerous situation.?

All that I have cited in relation to the Yoruba also applies top the Igbo, Hausa-Fulani and all other ethnic groups in Nigeria.

We cannot keep on looking at the rear view mirror (all the time) while trying to drive in a forward direction. Yes, it is prudent to check
the rear view mirror from time to time for safety purposes, but our journey will be further imperiled if we spend all the time
reminiscing on our great past empires and kingdoms.

There is a great nation about  to emerge in today's Nigeria. It will be built on the strengths of the component ethnic groups who reside and work in  36 states in the federation and FCT Abuja.!

Currently the only relevant nation, kingdom (or emipre) etc. in modern day Nigeria is the one governed by the Federal, state and local governments assisted and facilitated by the moral and historical authority/suasion of our traditional rulers, in a secondary role.
That is the way it is. The alternative--driving backwards to a feudalistic existence in micro states to be carved out of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is untenable no matter how romantic such notion might be to history buffs!
It is nothing but only a pipedream that gives succour to to the ethnic chest beaters!

Bye,

Ola

Mr Yoruba Nation,

Who are fighting for other great ethnic nations of Nigeria (EDO, UROBO, IJAW, IBIBIOS, TIVS, NUPE, KANURI, ETC) living and working in the north?
Where is the right of the 247 ethnic nations spread all over Nigeria?
Why should it be a few man justice so call Yoruba Nation (+ZO-BIA) and not all?
Those who think their ethnic nation or group are one who demand hearing at this moment of Nigerian history ARE not only MENTALLY ILL but insane!.
WAZOBIA REPUBLIC PARANOIA must be destroyed and cured for a true FEDERALISM AND REPUBLIC to emerge for the good of ALL NIGERIAN PEOPLE! HO! HA!

Has the Yoruba leadership any effective means of responding to the perpetual riots that have taken the lives of so many people the Yoruba inclusive in the North? Are the Yoruba groups in the North so organised that they can protect millions of our women, children and the aged in time of crisis? Do we have an effective communication network that can safe them in time of crisis as we see today? My greater worry is the Ogere end of the Lagos/Ibadan express way which is so sensitive to our collective survival yet recently overwhelmed and suddenly populated by trailers and shanties dominated by people that pose potential threat considering the fragile and tempestuous nature of the Nigerian state. On several occasions, riots have been let off leading to the blockade of the Ibadan-Lagos highway by these elements, shocking our travelers and leading2 deaths. Unfortunately the lack of visionary leadership in Ogun and Oyo, two states with jurisdiction over Ogere highway end, are so blind that they can't see d threat this Talibanisation of the most important highway in Yorubaland pose to our collective safety. Let's pray there won't b a spill-over of the current crisis, I bet we are encircled. Adewale Adeoye
