LEADERSHIP CHANGE by Tony Marinho,Ibadan Nigeria,June 25,2011

Once again we gather with hope for an end to unnecessary suffering at the brink of a new socio-political era. What that era brings depends largely on the attitude, strategy and plans of the politicians who we have voluntarily spent our time and lost money from work closures to put in place to work for us in the political arena till 2015. Fellow Nigerians have employed them through the ballot box to work for them in the next four years. Unfortunately pre-election humility is often replaced by political arrogance. We need to replace the political arrogance of the past with permanent political humility. Please do not forget that your voters are your benefactors and require the dividends of democracy as their reward. Very few of the past politicians earned the names they took for granted. Excellency, distinguished, honourable are very meaningful but rarely lived up to in Nigeria. I will quote my Nation Article of two weeks ago '

Which legislature ever signed the budget for 5,000 footballs or handballs for the schools in the state? . Budgets from around the world abroad can be easily studied on the internet to know what is missing in our budgets. They are employed by the citizens and must eventually answer to the citizens at the next elections which will be better than the last and mean the politician will no longer be able to rely on corruption, sentiment, mis-representation or vote rigging. The next election will not depend on how much has been accumulated in a political war chest but what you have done in your four years, how many citizens you listened to and worked for.   , be creative. Why not take the legislative meetings to the zones of the Oyo State to bring leadership to the grassroots and see what is on the ground statewide. Nigerians are often easily intimidated by authority or violence and are often ignorant in fact and of their rights. Every Nigerian has seen or been in an okada or danfo accident. Introduce legislation that protects the accident victim and makes NURTW/ okada unions or individuals more responsible for the safety of their passengers and the public. Legislation can make them be properly registered in their Parks with large numbers on their uniforms and vehicles, proper receipts given for long distance travel and names and photography of driver and  the conductor ID, clearly displayed and on their necks so that they can be easily identified and forced  pay compensation to accident victims in and outside their vehicles. In fact the driver should introduce himself to the passengers. This will force a rethink about speed and poor vehicle maintenance and also return the NURTW to its primary role of transporting he citizens safely.

Oyo State is blessed with highly professional and skilled advisers to the UN, World Bank, WHO, IMF, Federal Government, World Court, serving and retired as residents in and around Bodija. It has the highest concentration of retired professors, National Merit Award Winners and think-tank people in the country. But they are ignored. It has wasted its talent in the past. Discussions by the Deputy Speaker and Honourable Bolomope revealed the difficulty with the high and sometimes difficult demands, financial and social, raised by the followership for themselves and for their dependents, for events and for other activities. It is essential to reduce such demands and expectations by educating the citizenry and also the burden of harassment by young unemployed citizens who expect a handout.
