TOFAC IS INAUGUARATED!
The Toyin Falola Annual Conference on Africa and the African Diaspora was inaugurated on July 4th-6th 2011 at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Anchored by the Ibadan Cultural Studies Group, the theme of the conference was "Creativity and Cultural Expressions in Africa and the African Diaspora" and it attracted scholars from all over the world. At least fifty well-researched papers were presented on various topics during the three days the conference lasted.
Justifying the christening of the annual conference after Professor Toyin Falola, the Convener of TOFAC, Professor Ademola Dasylva explained that this was in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a scholar and teacher of African and African American History. Describing him as a renowned creative writer, a foremost academic icon and certainly the most celebrated published African/Black scholar of all times; Professor Dasylva affirmed that in choosing Professor Falola, the organizers wanted to recognize him as a scholar who has developed a stellar global reputation because of the significant impact his scholarship has provoked in and had on the global academy, and the way he has used his agency to unselfishly elevate others, especially students, professional colleagues, and members of the public at large in the last four decades.
A major highlight of the conference was the conferring of the TOFAC LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE AWARD to three distinguished scholars, namely Professor Toyin Falola, the Frances Higginbotham Nalle Centennial Professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria, and Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters; Professor Tunde Babawale, Director Center for Black and African Arts and Civilization; and Professor Femi Mimiko, Vice-Chancellor Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State.
Okpeh O. Okpeh, Jr.
