From: Ryan Connor <ryanconn@msu.edu> Date: 12 July 2011 Panel Proposal: Literary In/dependence Michigan State University Africanist Graduate Conference 2011 "Remixed, Reframed & Reimagined: Innovative Perspectives in African Studies" As many Africans can now reflect on 50 years of national independence, we might also consider how independence, liberation and self-determination have been figured in African novels, films and art of the past 50 years. This panel proposes to question the notion of "independence" in African arts today. The panel organizers are particularly interested in papers that ask what independence means for African writers, filmmakers and artists. What constraints do African authors face in making their work available to audiences at home and abroad? In what ways have African arts re-written the history of Independence in Africa? How do booming popular arts, like video film, demand we rethink independent African film? How do we deal with the bind between an artist's self-determination as a creative imagination, and the ethical implications of representing Africa? As artists explore new genres and media, how do they depend upon the precedence of vibrant cultural, artistic and textual traditions? Presenters should attempt to develop an innovative understanding of liberation, self-determination, or independence in the arts.
