Tutu congratulates south Sudan on independence(AFP) – 19 hours ago
JOHANNESBURG — A group of international statesmen headed by South Africa's Desmond Tutu on Thursday congratulated south Sudan on its imminent independence, but voiced concern over violence along the new border. The Elders group sent a letter to south Sudan president Salva Kiir ahead of the split from Sudan on Saturday, urging him to foster good relations with Khartoum."The Elders share in your joy and will celebrate this historic moment with you all," Tutu said in a statement."The Elders also urged the government of the new Republic of South Sudan to foster harmonious relations between Juba and Khartoum," the statement said."The Elders are deeply troubled by the ongoing conflict, internal displacement and killing of civilians in Abyei and Southern Kordofan," it added."They have urged the authorities in North and South Sudan, as well as regional states, to avoid actions that could provoke further violence and increase the risk of large-scale conflict.""We encourage you to ensure that opposition parties, civil society representatives and all regions of the (Republic of South Sudan) can play a meaningful role in the South's transition," they said in the letter."Marginalisation of these groups would harm the prospects for democracy and lasting peace and stability."The first mission by The Elders was to Sudan in 2007, after Nelson Mandela announced the group's formation. Among the statesmen in the group are former US president Jimmy Carter and ex-UN secretary general Kofi Annan.
Prof Prince KC Asagwara:
My Point was that these religious skirmishes and localized dissensions by advocacy groups and socioeconomic activists don't rise to the level of concern and social disorder that would warrant a call for Nigerian dismemberment. After all, similar or greater incidence of occur in even the so-called STABLE Democracies around the world; take Gt Britain, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Nicaragua, China et cetera. The Alaskan separatist Movement Group continues to operate as we write!
What is critical is that Nigeria should learn to deal with the different groups that will rise up in the nation, presently and in future, just as other so-called Stable Democracies do; they will be there! As I said previously, in the Americas, Europe and Asia, strange people and groups rise and challenge the society everyday [as separatists, dissident groups, criminal syndicates, drug dealers, counterfeiters, corruption rings, insider traders, religious sects, disgruntled elements, fundamentalists of all shades etc]; when these incidence occur, citizens don't resort to the convenient solace of questioning the very existence of the nations; reasonable people analyze the root causes and take pragmatic actions to resolve the crises; criminals are punished; legitimate activists are engaged to ameliorate their grudges and grievances. That is how civilized modern societies operate and make progress. THAT IS WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN IN NIGERIA; not for some of you to be questioning the Nigerian structural composition and geography; or advocating her dismemberment, just because there are there problem. It is unreasonable for a modern thinker in a global village arrangement of contemporary times! That is the POINT! And on this note, it would appear that your allusion to what you dubbed a minority mindset, that makes ethnic groups like Edo to prefer Nigeria "as is" to a fragmented form that could lead to majority ethnic domination, lacks credence.
Furthermore, it appears some of you believe that unique mutants of homo sapiens make up America; however, Americans are regular human beings like the different ethnic groups in Nigeria; what is different is that the great majority of American citizens believe in their nation, even if she is IMPERFECT; and if there is any institution that will make her function better, Americans will push for its establishment, rather than clamor for her dismemberment. A good example was shown recently when the Governor Texas mentioned that Texas could go its was if there are too many problems in America. HE WAS SHOUTED DOWN!!! Take care. JUI

RE: Nigeria, you'd better Shrink or Sink
Please forward widely and as widely as possible. This should be an Eye Opener for the oppressed peoples/nations in Nigeria. The Brits are not more human than the different indigenous peoples in One-Nigeria, are they? Anytime European or British persons or even One-Nigerianist open their mouths to tell you about "One-Nigeria", then you know what to say to them. .... And as for one dishonest intellectual who signs off with JUI, and who recently posted some things in "naija" forums, he completly missed the point by citing Alaska and other places where there is unrest... Herein lies his Fallacy: The peoples should come first and not the State but MR JUI puts the State first before the peoples i.e if he even considered the aggrieved peoples in the first place... and for how long does he think that these States will continue to contain the prerssure? Even the once believed invincible USA is a failed State and will eventually break up. It is just a matter of time and perherps this could occur sooner following the serious financial crisis., which we expect to happen. We may however not have to wait for a currency crises to see it happen... but it is important to have in mind that US has a debt that it can not service, their housing market has crashed, the NASDQ bubble burst etc. and there is so much wrong with the US, the people (US citizens) do not trust their FED govt and yes there are seperatists/independence movements. It is also important to note that these peoples are not facing half of what the peoples in Nigeria face today. Furthermore iit should be noted that there was a time people didn't imagine that Rome will fall. You saw former Yugoslavia break up, you witnessed USSR break up, also former Eastern European countries, Scotland wants to be independent from UK and as we speak they are actively working towards it, using institutional mechanisms provided by the State .ie provisons of the UK and they are doing this via the SNP (i.e using legal means). Now we see South Sudan [Black Africans, with oil in their region] who will tommorow be independent. All these are efforts to find freedom and lasting peace.. but this one called JUI (whatever that means) turns a blind eye to all of these .Here is another decietful statement by JUI:"reasonable people analyze the root causes and take pragmatic actions to resolve the crises; criminals are punished; legitimate activists are engaged to ameliorate their grudges and grievances. That is how civilized modern societies operate and make progress"Who is JUI to insist that people of all shapes and sizes, of all backgrounds, peoples all over the world, haven't analyzed the situation? People [even in "usefuless" gossip fora/forums] have made references to Nigeria's past and have projected the [non]future so what the heck is Mr JUI talking by saying peoples should "analyze"? In fact there are too many history books and even too many complaint emails for all to read. How much more analysis does one need in order to get it? Hello???!!! Hint: For instance everyone knows that "Nigeria is not a nation. It is a mere geographical expression."JUI doesn't stop there he tells you that you are not resonable and that you are uncivilized if you chose not to be a slow coach like him [i.e if you fail to analyze failed Nigeria at his pace]. He is blackmailing you by calling you uncivilized.... besides what is civilized about keeping non-uniting peoples oppressed in a failed backward State? Nigeria is now classed as a 4th world country: i.e a rich State with poor citizens. That is JUI's civilization.JUI warns you that you are not civilized if you do not think they way he wants you to think. He says: "THAT IS WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN IN NIGERIA; not for some of you to be questioning the Nigerian structural composition and geography; or advocating her dismemberment, just because there are there problem. It is unreasonable for a modern thinker in a global village arrangement of contemporary times!"But wouldn't a serious detective examine everthing and anything? Besides should one be free to examine anything any everything in this matter?See also below: UK will not block scottish referendum. There are real alternatives to Nigeria.

If the "Brits will not rest until they get EU referendum", why the should the Igbo [ or any other people] rest until they get their referendum to decide whether or not to exit the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and especially a failed one for that matter? I wonder... Are the Igbo less human than the Brits? What are the Igbo politicians doing? Despite arguments that can be made in favour of the EU [i.e in an economic sense], the "Brits will not rest until they get EU referendum". Nigeria however is a genocide State put together by foreigners, not for the "Nigerians" but for the foreigner's interest. I however wonder if now with Nigeria's Boko Haram , One-Nigeria is still in the interest of UK, and if so, for how much longer that will last.
It is also important to note that the UK is not part of the European Monetary Union (EMU), so in comparison to [other] European countries that joined the EU it still has it's autonomy i.e. Although some EU laws have been enforced in the UK, the UK for instance still has fiscal and monetary policy autonomy. UK still prints it own sovereign currency, and can also devalue its currency to help manage its debt, unlike the member European States who are in the EMU. In fact this is what Greece would have done to manage its debt.
so what exactly is the beef of these Brits who won't rest about the EU, since we are told that "Brits will not rest until they get EU referendum"? It is simply that people don't just throw away their sovereignty. When people feel that they are coerced into something they resist it. It is a natural response. This is what differentiates a free human from one who was born a slave, or robot. Even animals put in captivity will try to set themselves free. Slaves are meant to try to free themselves.

Brits will not rest until they get EU referendum
04 July 2011 | Integration and enlargement | United KingdomMomentum and media support is growing for a vote on continued British membership of the EU, claims Jon Gaunt![]()
Political commentators including Boris Johnson are keen to describe the Greece crisis as a Greek tragedy. They are wrong - it is a tragicomedy verging on a Whitehall, or should that be a Brussels, farce.
Let us face it; the Europhiles have been caught with their metaphorical trousers down by what has happened in Ireland and now Greece. Meanwhile, Spain is standing in the wings as the next expected casualty to enter the drama before the curtain falls. People like me have been warning for years that it was a complete and utter joke to link the economy of a country like Greece with an economic powerhouse like Germany.
We also warned that the United Kingdom should never join the euro and we were shouted down as little Englanders at least and racists and Xenophobes at worse, by the leftie loving Europhile press - led by the Pravda of the European Union, the BBC. But we were right and they wrong. And on the wrong side of the argument were serving ministers like Ken Clarke and Nick Clegg. They should hang their heads in shame and admit they were wrong.
People like Gordon Brown, who signed away our sovereignty, and David Cameron, who u-turned on his "cast iron guarantee" of a referendum on the EU, should admit their mistakes and folly by now backing a referendum of the UK population - on whether we stay in or out of this expensive undemocratic and failing European experiment. As Greece crashes and burns, the collective brains in Brussels do not seem to have a clue how to solve the crisis. Or, rather they are still not willing to admit that the emperor of the EU has no clothes.
Instead of allowing Greece to leave the eurozone, restore the Drachma and deflate their currency - they want, instead, to pour more billions of our cash into a Kamikaze economy that has no return flight. The unelected, but highly expensive European Commission has proposed an increase in the EU budget of 5 per cent, pan-European VAT, a new Tobin tax and reform of the UK's rebate - fought for and won by Margaret Thatcher. A case of while Rome – or, in this case Athens - burns they fiddle, normally with their expenses. Remember, the EU accounts have not been signed off for years and years.
And at home, we are facing the most draconian cuts to public services in decades. George Osborne stated that he had no choice, but to cut our welfare bill by £7bn. Then, just weeks later, he committed exactly the same amount in a bailout to Ireland. Go figure. His leader, Cameron, not content with ring fencing foreign aid actually increased it - as thousands marched against the cuts in London. Of course, we will not directly contribute to the Greek bailout. But let me please remind you that we have just increased our contribution to the IMF disaster fund by £9bn. We now pay in more than the US, which of course when - and it is when and not if - the Greeks default we will again end up picking up the tab.
Although, we should really feel sorry for the Germans. Yes, you read that right. The German population are being asked to bail out the Greeks, while they continue to work till they drop - but most Greeks can retire at 50. Not only that, but it seems that the Greek population have a "give and take" attitude to paying tax. They refuse to give the tax and they take as many benefits as they can con out of their inefficient system.
Now there are rumours coming out of Number Ten Downing Street, in London, that Oliver Letwin and Cameron's personal adviser Steve Hilton want out of the EU altogether. Rumours that would have been laughed out of court just a few months ago. The truth is, Europe is coming back to haunt Cameron as it has done all recent Conservative Prime Ministers. Outside events are dictating that we must re-examine our relationship with Brussels. There is talk of renegotiation. But let us be clear, poll after poll of the British public says they do not want to tinker with the edges of this cancer. We want to cut it out completely.
It is the politicians who got us into this mess. They must now allow the people to decide whether we want to stay in it or not. That is why the EU Referendum Campaign was formed – to, simply, give the British people the choice to stay or go. Now, three major papers are supporting our demand for a referendum led from the front by the Daily Express, followed by the Daily Mail and of course only two weeks ago the the Sun published a poll clearly showing that they and the their readers want a referendum too.
Cameron cannot and should not be allowed to ignore this groundswell of support. He needs to act now before the inevitable happens and Greece and Ireland default, which will plunge Portugal and then Spain into the abyss. It is not just the euro that is doomed, but the whole EU project and the UK should stop giving bail-outs to the PIGS. Instead, we should bail out of this failed United States of Europe project immediately.

The SNP wants to hold a referendum towards the end of the five-year parliamentary term
The UK government will not move to block a referendum on Scottish independence, the Secretary of State for Scotland has said.
Liberal Democrat MP Michael Moore said there would not be constitutional questions raised about the rights or wrongs of holding a vote. The newly-elected majority SNP Scottish government intends to bring forward a referendum in its five-year term. The Conservatives, Labour and Lib Dems all oppose independence.Mr Moore told BBC Scotland's Politics Show it was now up to the SNP to bring forward the referendum, which First Minister Alex Salmond said would come "well into the second half" of the new, five-year parliament."I firmly believe the Scottish Parliament, if it so decides, can proceed with a referendum," Mr Moore said, adding: "There will be the normal electoral rules that have to be followed and it will have to be discussed carefully with the relevant authorities."The Scottish secretary added: "We could, I suppose, try to make a constitutional issue about where the powers lie or don't, but I don't think that would be a sensible use of anybody's time.Continue reading the main storyAnalysis

It's all very well for the UK government to say it won't stand in the way of an independence referendum. But the bottom line is this is happening, whether the coalition likes it or not.The minority SNP government in the last parliament tried to win support for a Referendum Bill at Holyrood - even offering an olive branch to include an extra question on more powers for Scotland - but the parties didn't go for it and, in the end, the plan was dropped. But the SNP will shortly be in majority government. That means no more bartering - the party's MSPs will simply vote through the bill, no matter which way Labour, the Lib Dems and Tories go.The opposition parties say the SNP has played down the issue, so as not to scare the horses. And a vote for the SNP doesn't necessarily mean a vote for independence. But, the SNP, in the wake of its stunning and decisive election win, is still committed to the vision of a "free and just" Scotland. The UK government would become involved in the event of a referendum "Yes" vote.Such a result would not mean automatic independence, but a mandate from the people would provide a rock-solid platform on which to negotiate a settlement with Westminster - albeit one it would be unable to refuse."If the issue of the day is to decide the future of Scotland within the United Kingdom, then that's more important we have that debate, rather than have a debate about whether or not we can have the debate."
Rather than the referendum, Mr Salmond has decided to concentrate for the moment on further devolution of powers to Holyrood as part of the Scotland Bill, currently going through Westminster. The first minister told BBC Scotland his party had received an "overwhelming mandate" from the people for "job-creating powers", namely control over borrowing, the Crown Estates Commission and corporation tax.But he added: "Even if we gained all these things, that would give the Scottish Parliament control over approximately 20% of the revenue base of Scotland."Independence would give the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish people, control over almost 100% of the revenue base of Scotland."Challenged on why the referendum was not being held sooner, Mr Salmond said: "That's the plan we outlined to the Scottish people very clearly in our election campaign - we did so consistently. We've been backed overwhelmingly by the Scottish people on that prospectus."So you don't change it now just because you have an overwhelming majority."The people have showed faith in the Scottish National Party, and therefore the SNP government will repay that faith and keep faith with the people."
Click to playAlex Salmond on the SNP government's next steps
Meanwhile, Labour leader Ed Miliband told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show his party must set out an alternative vision to independence, adding: "I don't think the majority of people in Scotland want independence or separatism."Scottish Conservative deputy leader Murdo Fraser called on the UK government to give "very serious consideration" to launching its own referendum on the future of the UK constitution to prevent a "damaging" and long-running debate.Defence Secretary Liam Fox, said: "Whether the result in Scotland was the Scottish voters actually positively having a view on independence is, I think, very much up for debate."The Conservative minister told the Sky News Murnaghan programme: "I think it was very much more about Labour having taken voters in Scotland for granted and the old Labour fiefdoms rebelling."

China to expand investment in South Sudan after independence
June 1, 2011 (JUBA) - The Peoples Republic of China - the world's emerging second largest economy - has expressed its readiness to invest in South Sudan after its declaration of independence in July.

Machar told the Chinese diplomats that the region was working to attract foreign investors in order to realize the expectations of the people of South Sudan after independence. In a statement to the press after the meeting, the Director General in charge of the department of West Asia and North Africa in the Chinese ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chen Xiaodang, said China was ready to expand its investment in various economic sectors in South Sudan. He said the two countries will promote their bilateral relations as China will encourage its private enterprises to carry out economic and trade activities between the two nations. He said South Sudan was looking up to Nigeria for assistance, especially by providing human resources in the areas of education, health care delivery and basic infrastructure.

"We can also benefit from Nigeria's experience in managing our oil resources, we are also lagging behind in the area of education. By the time we celebrate our independence on July 9, we would be the most illiterate nation on the continent."
