The Zimbabwean author NoViolet Bulawayo has won the twelfth Caine Prize for African Writing. The award, which is regarded as Africa's leading literary award and commonly known as the 'African Booker', was bestowed upon her for her short story 'Hitting Budapest'. The Caine Prize is awarded to a short story by an African writer published in English, whether in Africa or elsewhere.

The announcement was made yesterday (11 July) at a celebratory dinner at the Bodleian Library, Oxford. NoViolet Bulawayo emerged winner after the judges--chaired by award-winning Libyan novelist Hisham Matar; Granta deputy editor Ellah Allfrey; Georgetown University Professor of English David Gewanter; publisher, film and travel writer Vicky Unwin; and award-winning author Aminatta Forna--made their selection from 126 entries from 17 African countries.

NoViolet Bulawayo, the winner of the £10,000 Caine Prize will be given the opportunity of taking up a month's residence at Georgetown University, Washington DC, as a Caine Prize/Georgetown University Writer-in-Residence. The award will cover all travel and living expenses.
