House-Soremekun Appointed Director of Africana Studies at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis
Dr. William Blomquist, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), has appointed Dr. Bessie House-Soremekun as the Director of Africana Studies.
House-Soremekun is also the Public Scholar in African-American Studies, Civic Engagement and Entrepreneurship; Professor of Political Science; Professor of Africana Studies; and the Founding Executive Director of the Center for Global Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development at IUPUI. The professor is an award-winning author, inventor and entrepreneur, as well as an internationally-recognized scholar, expert, and advocate on entrepreneurship and economic development.
Since joining the IUPUI faculty in August of 2007, she has served as a member of the School of Liberal Arts Promotion and Tenure Committee, the Search Committee for the Founding Dean of the Honors College, Chair of the Distinguished Speakers Series for the Committee on African and African American Studies, Lead Advisor for Africana Studies majors and minors, and established the "Celebrating Our Own Lecture Series" to showcase innovative research performed by IUPUI faculty members.
She was appointed by Dr. Uday Sukhatme, Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties, as a Faculty Fellow from 2008-2010 in the Office of Academic Affairs. In the role of Faculty Fellow and Public Scholar, she achieved a number of important milestones. She convened the highly successful 1st Public Scholars in Africana Studies International Conference on Globalization which brought African Royalty to the campus for the first time, as well as scholars from Africa, Europe, North America and South America, students, entrepreneurs, public policy advocates, community leaders, and members of the public at large. She served as coordinator of the Conference Fund in Academic Affairs, organized workshops to promote the retention and academic success of SRUF faculty (Support for Recruitment of Underrepresented Faculty), and worked collaboratively with the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research to create the innovative "Thinking Outside of the Circle Workshop Series" to promote interdisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences.
She also played a significant role in persuading the African Studies Association, the premier association for Africanist scholars around the world, to hold its annual international conference in the city of Indianapolis in 2014 for the very first time, with IUPUI receiving the honor of being selected to serve as the local host institution.

She is the author/editor of 6 books, numerous journal articles, and book chapters, and is currently working collaboratively with PBS/WVIZ ideastream to create a television documentary based on her award-winning book, "Confronting the Odds: African American Entrepreneurship in Cleveland, Ohio."
