USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Patrick Cockburn: Why the West is committed to the murderous rebels in Libya - Commentators, Opinion - The Independent

Doctore Pablo

Strictly speaking, fighting is forbidden during the Muslim's Holy
Month of Ramadan and in my humble opinion the fratricidal crimes being
committed during this month would be extra heinous.

To describe Great Britain's role in Libya as "comical ineptitude" is a
cynical way of misrepresenting the suffering on both sides of the
Libyan divide - and furthermore, it's not only Great Britain that has
recognised the so called rebels – nor is the Arab League in favour of
the Gaddafi regime's continuation.

It's not certain that when Abdel Fattah Younes defected, all the 8,000
troops under his command defected with him.

As far as assassinations go, there are so many possibilities in this
uncertain world in which "money doesn't talk it swears" - there's the
case of Yitzhak Rabin, there's the case of Trotsky and there are so
many other examples of infiltration and assassination, all of which is
no laughing matter – or anything to taunt anybody about, be it the
last day of Saddam or Osama Bin Ladin.

It's more than likely that Gaddafi will eventually be deposed by
someone or some ones in his inner circle. Like Jesus – if you would
like to compare his disciples to Gaddafi's

What's happened to the TNC's commander Abdel Fattah Younes could be a
pre-figuration of what could well happen to Colonel Gaddafi himself -
and so Gaddafi taunting Britain because someone possibly in General
Younes' inner circle killed him could turn out to be an instance of
dramatic irony, should the same happen to the Colonel in the near
future. The saying is, "He who laughs last, laughs best" and the rule
of thumb is

"And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin' "

Of course there are all kinds of suspicions as to what conglomeration
of unlikely fellows constitute " the rebels":

One thing is certain: No matter what happens, Gaddafi is not going to
be the Libyan leader for ever, and so it's not too early to be talking
about the post-Gaddafi Libya.

In this morning's BBC news it was reported that the British government
intends to be cautious about any role that may be given to militants
in a future Libyan government:

On the whole, my main source of news and opinion about the Libyan
crisis has consistently looked upon the then rehabilitated Gaddafi
before this crisis as more of a neutral friend than an enemy and this
has been mostly dictated by the wisdom that derives from "better the
devil that you know than the devil you don't know" – the fear being
that the post-Gaddafi Libya could be a safe haven for al-Qaeda and
their terrorist Jihadist allies

The month of Ramadan should be as good a time as any for conciliatory
gestures - for at least the decency of observing a ceasefire and a
respite from Muslim fighting Muslim and hoping to arrive in paradise
during this month of fasting – a month of compassion and fasting not
of murder and blood-letting, especially in Syria.

Wa Salaam,

Cornelius
