USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: NigerianID | AL-MUSTAPHA’S CLAIMS: THE FRANTIC GROANS OF A DROWNING MAN

Dear Bash Bel,

Good Afternoon.

Thanks for your response.

Firstly, I have not in any way stated that Abdulsalam should not speak for himself .

Secondly, none of us would want to get into trouble. Neither do we pray for trouble for our fellow human beings or beat   and dance to  the drums of reprisal because another has a query to answer.  However,  as we would have with life, trouble is sometimes inevitable.

When such trouble comes, inasmuch as everyone has to speak for themselves, it would be morally unjust for people who feel they know you well to keep quiet and  only  wait for you to "speak for yourself" It would be a sin against my conscience and my God to keep quiet because I want to wait until Abdulsalam  "speaks for himself" . In the same way, if  I  feel  I know you well enough and I see you are being accused of what is not a behavioural trait of yours, I  would get up and speak on your behalf without fear. That does not stop you from speaking for yourself when the time arises.

I will not renege on insisting that  it is only right to say what I know about a person who I feel is being spoken unfairly of.  Keeping quiet would be a sin against my faith and humanity. We must always look at the other side of things. There is no one amongst us who would not want people to stand up in their defence. If I know you well enough and I see anyone trying to put you in an embarrassing situation, it would be unfair of me to remain quiet if I am of the impression that you do not deserve to be so treated. However, if  I feel you have the tendency of behaving the way you have been accused of behaving, I'll  let the matter be.

In the case of Abdulsalam, I would still say that Abdulsalam is not a man who has the time for  "blackmail" as Mustapha has stated;  furthermore, the Abdulsalam I know would not be interested in following up on a decree of that nature even if the person in question is the one who promulgated such a decree. He is not a man who would want to end the life of another person.

Finally, telling me : " you cannot speak for him" is wrong;  because, we should all pray that when people rise to accuse us , those who know us should also rise to tell the truth of what they really know about us. No matter your status, you would want those who know you well to speak up for you in challenging circumstances.  Nonetheless, that does not mean you should not speak in defence of yourself as well.

Please do feel free to get back to me if you need further clarification on anything I have said.

I hope you are having a pleasant weekend.

All the best and
kind regards,

Ifuemi Adepoju.

What Al Mustapha said was that Andulsalam insisted that the law must be followed to the latter during the 1996 coup attempt upon which OBJ and co were being tried. Since Obasanjo promulgated the decree in which many innocent officers fell victims, then he does not deserve to be spared. Out of magnanimity, the panel reduced the sentence to life imprisonment. Almustapha claime that he had sent a film of the proceedings to OBJ. Gen Abdulsalam owes us an explanation. You cannot speak for him. Bamu son shaidar zur.
