The former South African president, Nelson Mandela, has been admitted
to hospital for treatment for a "long-standing abdominal complaint",
the government has said.
In a statement, it said Mandela, 93, needed specialist treatment.
President Jacob Zuma asked that Mandela's privacy be respected. He did
not say at which hospital Mandela was being treated.
"We wish him a speedy recovery and assure him of the love and good
wishes of all South Africans and people throughout the world," the
statement from the president's office said.
Mac Maharaj, Zuma's spokesman, said he could not elaborate on
Mandela's situation but he would be issuing regular updates.
The BBC reported that Mandela underwent surgery overnight.
Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994 after
spending 27 years in prison for his fight against racist apartheid
rule, and was awarded a Nobel peace prize for his work.
His public appearances have become increasingly rare, and he was
hospitalised last year for acute respiratory infection. He spent
several days at Johannesburg's Milpark hospital and has since spent
his time between Johannesburg and his ancestral village of Qunu in
South Africa's impoverished Eastern Cape.
Mandela occupies a central position in the psyche of South Africa and
earlier this month the central bank issued a new set of bank notes
bearing his image.
His last major public appearance was in July 2010 at the final of the
World Cup in Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium.
