Leadership is not only about the “will and desire to excel”. It is also about wisdom, belief, and faith.
Wisdom is important in leadership because a leader needs to answer the what, why, and when questions of goals and objectives’ articulation and definition which set the course for plans and necessary present and future actions.
Belief is important because a leader must have little or no doubt in their mind that what they propose to do can be done and will serve their country and fellow citizens well.
Faith is important because a leader cannot get much done without a followership that believes in the leader as well at least, as the leader believes in the followership.
Wisdom, belief, and faith are without question commodities that many of Africa’s leaders have lacked and have not tried to develop or cultivate.
I remember a conversation I had many years ago in an Airplane with a former Vice President (African) of the World Bank. I asked him why World Bank and International Monetary Fund credit do not serve African countries as well as they do Asian countries. He gave me an incisive and detailed, well-thought through answer. He answered that leadership is nearly everything because leaders change countries for the better or for the worse. He gave me a history lesson on General Park’s role in South Korea’s transformation to a modern industrial country and asked me for an African equivalent. I am yet to come up with an answer.

While this article is about Korea, it could have been any of the African countries if the leadership has the will and desire to excel.
