WEDNESDAY, 25 APRIL 2012
The Senate on Wednesday passed six bills for the establishment of six federal universities, thus bringing the number of new universities to 10.
The new universities are in Lokoja, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (Ebonyi), Otuoke (Bayelsa), Oye-Ekiti (Ekiti), Dutse and Wukari (Taraba).
The assembly had passed the bills for the establishment of four universities on Tuesday.
The Senate passed the bills following the presentation of a report by the Committee on Education.
Presenting the report, the Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Uche Chukwumerije, explained that Yobe, Kebbi and Zamfara were the only states yet to have federal universities.
He, however, said that arrangements had reached advanced stage for the Federal Government to establish universities in the affected states.
Chukwumerije said the National Universities Commission had given an assurance that the universities would start with few courses in their areas of expertise.
Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, said that the quick passage of the bills demonstrated the senate's desire to ensure that" every Nigerian received quality education. ``
He said the desire would in turn aid substantial development in the country.

Senate approves varsity of Uyo, three others
By Onyedi Ojiabor and Sanni Onogu
The Senate on Tuesday approved the establishment of the Federal University of Uyo and three others.
Others are the Federal University of Dutsin-ma, Federal University of Kashere and the Federal University of Lafia.
This followed the consideration of the report of the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, titled: "That the Senate do consider the report of the committee on Education on the Federal University of Uyo, Federal University of Dutsin-ma, Federal University of Kashere and Federal University of Lafia Bills 2012."
Chukwumerije explained that the Federal University of Ekiti could not be included in the list because it now a subject of litigation.
He told Senators that the traditional rulers in the state have written a petition that the proposed university be named Federal University of Oye/Ikole Ekiti or Federal University of Ikole/Oye Ekiti.
He said the Ekiti traditional rulers have also demanded that the institution should be two-campus university with one in Oye Ekiti and Ikole Ekiti respectively.
Chairman Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang, commended the Senate for approving the establishment of Uyo with effect from 1992 when former military president Ibrahim Babangida declared it.
According to him, the action of the Senate would ensure that decisions and contractual agreements entered into by the management of the university since 1992 remain valid.
He expressed hope that the House of Representatives would follow suit before the final assent of the President.
