Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - John Mahama takes over as 4th President of Ghana

May I add my small voice to the echo of those of our brothers and sisters who
have been extending their condolences to Ghanians for this sudden death of our
colleague in the academy and head of state. Clearly, the histories of Nigeria
and Ghana are "somehow intertwined." It was not too long ago that the former
Nigerian president died in office, and now that of Ghana! Note, especially, the
smooth transition of power in Ghana. This is one reason we (as lovers of
democracy) should all be proud Ghanians.

In truth, there is much those of us who write on democratic transition and
consolidation in Africa should learn from our Ghanian brothers and sisters--just
as we should learn from their football prowess, too.

May the soul of our dear colleague rest in perpetual peace as he joins our
progressive ancestors!

Ike Udogu
