Back in the '70s some recently arrived Libyan exchange students accosted me for writing a letter to the student newspaper at UCLA asserting that there was evidence the ancient Egyptians were black. They insisted that the ancient Egyptians had been white.--
"You probably think you're white, too." I said.
"Yeah, I am Arab, I am white."
I pointed out that the president of the black students' association, who had written the letter touching off the whole debate about the race of the ancient Egyptians in the campus newspaper, was lighter than they were.
They were stunned.
Race is a socially defined term that varies from society to society. Human races are not biologically separate, and were we any species but our own we wouldn't be talking about races at all.
