Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: CNN Breaking News.....Lesson on Libya

John when you define race as "biologically separate" you stack the deck. When someone says "race" they don't necessarily mean biologically separate. They are frequently just marking an observable difference. Those observable differences are biologically determined, hence biology has some role in race talk--I think its a mistake load everything in the "racial construct" basket. The United States was a "social construct" imagined by genocidal Europeans. But no one denies its reality 2012 (although some of us still reject its legitimacy). Basically, the problem with some discussions of "social construct," in my view, is that it is frequently used to suggest that something is unreal or made up. kzs

Back in the '70s some recently arrived Libyan exchange students accosted me for writing a letter to the student newspaper at UCLA asserting that there was evidence the ancient Egyptians were black. They insisted that the ancient Egyptians had been white.

"You probably think you're white, too." I said.

"Yeah, I am Arab, I am white."

I pointed out that the president of the black students' association, who had written the letter touching off the whole debate about the race of the ancient Egyptians in the campus newspaper, was lighter than they were.

They were stunned.

Race is a socially defined term that varies from society to society. Human races are not biologically separate, and were we any species but our own we wouldn't be talking about races at all.
