According to Islamic history the Kabba in Mecca allegedly built by
Abraham gradually fell into desuetude as polytheism took it over and
the Kabba eventually housed a number of objects of worship until Ali
destroyed all the idols in that house and once more it became the
House for worshipping Allah....
So, there's the precedent of destroying what was before......
"You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for
yourself a graven image, nor any manner of likeness of any thing that
is in heaven above, that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the
water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them.
For I the Lord your G-d am a jealous G-d, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children of the third and fourth generation of them
that hate Me; and showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them
that love Me and keep My commandments."
The Torah is speaking to Israel collectively and individually.

You are right, "It doesn't say to destroy art which belonged to those
long dead and gone."
The Nazis looted a lot of Jewish art
