From: oladimeji aborisade: The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi wants the Federal Government of Nigeria to cut off the labor force to enable it wake up the troubled economy. In his opinion, the Governor wants to see 50% of the government workers fired to keep the economy going. According to him, the 36 states are unsustainable and 774 Local Government Areas constitute waste of public funds.
The question is whether the CBN Governor is talking fact, or fancy. If he is real, he ought to suggest ways by which waste could be eliminated in the society. Slowly, our country, Nigeria, is nuturing the culture of corruption which is eating up the flesh to almost the end. The next is the bone and finally a collapse of the system. If the Government of Nigeria is transparent, there is enough of opportunity for everyone to sustain the 160 million population without borrowing. The practice of Government of today is not significantly different from the colonial administration of caring for teachers, police, railway, post and telegraphs, bureaucrats, and others. Colonial did not encourage enterpreneurship so also our governments after independence. The Federal Government must expand its scope beyond colonial era and encourage local industries to develop their talents. At the colonial days, it was easy to pay workers because the number on the pay roll was limited. Since the main avenue for employment in Nigeria is the Government, one expects the frustration which the CBN Governor is experiencing. In my view, such frustration, is a sign of lack of intuition.
If the Governor of the CBN was rational, he ought to discuss how the Federal Government should clamp down on corruption. For instance, Nigeria is a country where corrupt people mostly from the Government and Bank circles are apprehended and let go. For example, Mr. Governor, what about the oil subsidy scandal, Gulf war oil windfall, House of Representative cases of corruption, Bank cases and several others. Put these loots together, you can successfully run a country of 200, 000,000 million people.
In Sanusi opinion, he wants the state and local governments closed down. He did not propose any alternative. Your idea is not logical because it did not meet any condions for Parliamentary System of Government and indeed not Communist. You are deeply frustrated but you have no idea of how to to correct the Nigeria economic problem.Perhaps, local government may go back to the Mayoral system which was in place at the time of Ibiyinka Olorunnimbe of Lagos. That may reduce the Councillors to part time. As for the Senate and the House of Representatives, some thing drastic must be done. I propose that matured people should run our country. We have many good people around the country.
Thank you,
