Irony or destiny... Reading the Washington Post today, November 27, 2012, on the front page, there is a fascinating story about CyberCity.
"CyberCity has all the makings of a regular town. There's a bank, a hospital and a power plant. A train station operates near a water tower. The coffee shop offers free WiFi. But only certain people can get in: government hackers preparing for battles in cyberspace.
The town is a virtual place that exists only on computer networks run by a New Jersey-based security firm working under contract with the U.S. Air Force. Computers simulate communications and operations, including e-mail, heating systems, a railroad and an online social networking site, dubbed FaceSpace." America is in the next frontier protecting her new borders. I am happy for America.
On the same page, there is a weepy story about Jean Kabre, who came from the end of the earth, Burkina Faso and clawed his way up to the ranks to become a well-loved concierge "in the lobby of the marble and granite office building at 101 Constitution Ave.," in Washington DC. His colleagues and clients learn of his large family (a mother and four children) and large clan back in the village and they decide to help him and his village. They raise funds and do what thieving governments will not do. They build a well with a hand pump and there are heart warming images of happy boys racing through the dusty streets presumably to welcome a mother carrying 'a full basin" of clean water. Burkino Faso is here, begging for clean water. I am happy for Jean Kabre. And Burkina Faso.
Same world. Different planets. It is what it is. We did not ask to be born. We are here.
