Re: FW: USA Africa Dialogue Series - FW: GHANA - World Bank Investing in Five-Star Hotel In Ghana

I wonder how these historical facts impact on this story now......

The P/NDC under the so-named revolutionary, J. J. Rawlings, sold most of the hotels to themselves or foreign multinational companies. The Ambassador Hotel, Continental Hotel, Kumasi City Hotel, etc., and other regional hotels are now owned by Ghanaian politicians or foreign companies. The same can be said for all the factories built by Nkrumah. Sadly and paradoxically Rawlings' wife, Nana Konadu Rawlings, is now the owner of Nsawam Cannery, one of the largest fruit/vegetable processing factories built by Nkrumah in 1961. Long Live Nkrumahism! Long Live the CPP

Brother Kwabena:

Thanks for the historical perspective; this one reason we should be careful about sometimes relying on journalistic stuff as intellectual material.

More important re: your posting is the supreme irony:  that the Movenpick Hotel is exactly in the same spot as one of those hotels you mention--the former Ambassador Hotel!  I do not know how the private group got that choice land.....looking into it will be an excellent case study in corruption...

In addition to posting such neocolonized and homegrown narratives, we also have to deconstruct them, or ask for and provide new frontiers of knowledge. Foreign writers often preface their reports on Africa with forensic attention to marginalizing metaphors of doom and gloom: "Accra is a city of choking red dust, where almost no rain falls for three months at a time and clothes hung out on a line dry in 15 minutes." This reporter must be told that the provision of hotels in Ghana is nothing new! For example, between 1957 and 1965, Nkrumah built about 8 'five-star' hotels, not to mention numerous district 'catering rest houses' that have well-groomed manicured lawns, coiffured gardens, and unique time-honored "Ghanaianized" hospitality services. There are also numerous private-owned hotels all over Ghana. Even my hometown of about 17, 000 inhabitants of farmers and traders, nestled in the soaring Akuapem Hills, has a 55-room hotel with well-equipped conference rooms.
