Dear Professor Assensoh,
Thank you very much for sending this sir. I hope you are feeling better health-wise and Sister Yvette and the young men are doing fine.
On another note, Sir, I think Patience may have to leave school because her performance is very poor. I am not sure whether they will allow her to register for the spring semester. Her GPA is below expectation. I do not know what is her problem. She started taking some medication for depression but I have no confidence in those drugs creating a sense of drive, energy and focus in studies. Part of the problem, is that in this context, Ruth should be close to her and have a deeper insight on what is going on with Patience, but she has no way of doing that and relying on me.
On my part, Patience is trying to avoid me because she knows my expectation is very high. I once mentioned to you that before she went to college she started being rebellious to me at a time when Ruth felt like I was just being hard. But part of Patience's problem is the way she played in High School and when I was putting pressure on her to do her home work she felt I was being strict. She is reaping the results of her rebellion.
While I feel terribly bad, I have no sense of guilt because given my background, I have not had what she is now having but she is not making good use of it. I have done all I can to support her. She has to make the best use of opportunities she has. For an ordinary American to have 95% tuition discount is like a great scholarship to celebrate. Later today, I will be seeing unofficially one of her teachers in the fall to get a perspective of her challenges. My feeling as a faculty is that she is not ready for college. Something is wrong with her and she has to figure that out.
Samuel

Past Dialogue discussions about China's role in Africa (including the building of AU headquarters in Addis) make it useful for those interested to read the attached piece about China from THE SUNDAY TIMES OF LONDON.
