Blatter: Milan walk-off was wrong

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has urged footballers not to leave the pitch if they are subjected to racial abuse.

On Thursday AC Milan players walked off after Kevin-Prince Boateng was subjected to racist abuse from fans of fellow Italian side Pro Patria during a friendly match.
The actions of Boateng and his team-mates put the spotlight firmly on the problem of racism in football and on Sunday during their Serie A win against Siena the Milan players wore anti-racism slogans on the back of their shirts in a further gesture of solidarity against the issue.
But Blatter has questioned their actions and claimed such tactics are not the right way of tackling the problem.
"Walk off? No. I don't think that is the solution," Blatter is quoted as saying in theNational newspaper in United Arab Emirates. "I don't think you can run away, because then the team should have to forfeit the match. This issue is a very touchy subject, but I repeat there is zero tolerance of racism in the stadium, we have to go against that."
Milan responded by releasing a statement, saying: "AC Milan reaffirm its dissent towards all forms of racism, however they are manifested. We invite the national and international sporting authorities to adopt and apply every rule against racism."
Blatter's controversial stance has attracted criticism from Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri who defended his players and criticised Italian fans for their part.
"We wanted to give a signal," he said. "Players can't suspend a match but others can. There need to be rules put in place. We made a signal for the future. There needs to be more civility in Italian stadiums."
Reading striker Jason Roberts, who opted not to wear a Kick It Out t-shirt earlier in the season, also voiced his disapproval via his personal Twitter account.
He said: "This is CLASSIC..Blatter has outdone himself here...So..if you are being racially abused in a game, and have reported it to the Ref 3 times, just stand there and take it, that way YOU win..
"And don't worry because Blatter and those like him..are going to hit the Clubs/FA/with a meaningless fine, or write a plan, that way YOU win.
"No Thanks Sepp...tried that..65k fine for repeat offenders like Serbia etc..how about..WALK OFF THE PITCH..the only language you understand!"
FA general secretary Alex Horne was another who spoke out in defence of Boateng's actions, but stressed that the referee must do more to combat racism if and when it occurs.
Horne told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "If players are receiving sustained abuse on the pitch they should be reporting it to the referee. The players, through the captain, should be reporting it to the referee. The referee should be taking the players off the pitch and warning the crowds that they should desist with their abuse, and ultimately there's a sanction there if the fans don't listen to that.
"If the players feel the referee isn't dealing with it then I can understand why they walk off the pitch. Why should you have to tolerate that in this day and age?"

Blatter, you are an absolute lemon...and someone needs to squeeze you dry
blatter is a useless $@%!
For me what Milan did was political given Berlusconi is back in politics.
says the guy who sold the world cup to racist Russia
Trying not to be offensive to Gary Speed, but Blatter needs to do the same...
Blatter is too controversial its like he reasons like dictator speaking bullcrap.
Sepp Blatter simply does not know what to say when it comes to the more sensitive issues of race.
KPB and both teams reacted perfectly. what they did is the solution that sepp blatter should endorse and promote.
Blatter is a lying b@sterd. KPB and the whole AC Milan team get much respect for their actions.
fifa bunch of *sses. blatter has to be man of color to experience racism!
kpb signal is better, jason roberts said for a club to pay 65k when something like this happens dosen't mean a thing this is just more money for the italian fa or which ever country it happens in. blatter u just said something about mls and 12 years if this is your way of dealing with this problem it wouldn't be 12 years but more.
I believe KPB set a good precedence and now UEFA, FIFA and/or the Italian FA need to back up his actions with sanctions against the club in question and any other club or nation that provides a hostile (racist) environment for player to ply their trade..
If KPB walks off and the people in power don't back up his actions with fines and bans then what he did was all in vain.. If they now place sanctions (be it transfer embargoes, stadium lockouts, exclusion from UEFA, FIFA or national competition
...more
walking off a pitch is a good tactic when u want to abandon a match.
Losing 3-0, walks off the pitch and say it's because someone racial abused me.
Fairly certain that in the KPB incident that it wasn't a person or even a few people racially abusing him.. It was an entire section of the crowd - imo it seems like a fairly acceptable measure he took to stop the abuse.. In the case of a claim that someone in the crowd has racially abuse the player (in the event that a team is losing or winning) then the culprit should be ejected immediate and banned for life. I believe there is a bit difference between a couple of bad apples compared to a larg...more
good tactic? WTF are you talking about?
it was a friendly game between Milan and a 4th division league team!
What you say makes zero sense. This was a world class team against a team several divisions below. It was a FRIENDLY! The three abused players coaches etc reported a section of fams chanting throughout the first 25 minutes. I guess no one was removed and it continued until KPB and teammates left the field.

If a team is winning 3-0 and their fans are making racist chants, and they do nothing to stop it then they deserve to lose the match. Let Barcelona get bounced out of the CL and it will stop the BS cold. I worked in an NFL stadium and if you let loose with a few too many F Bombs you can end up in jail very quickly.

Blatter sending signals that he is in FACT a Racist.
he surely doesn't know how to take the aggressive stand that is required for that behavior that is for sure. his leadership with this problem is pathetic
please
someone shoot this guy
Blatter should be caged for ugliness, definition of Jacka*s !!

walking off the pitch is the best solution and for abusive fans to lose the joy of watching the match is a good punishment, but for good ones, it is not fair but at least they can help by report those who ruined it to the police or to the hosting club...
blatter is a corrupt idiot
The "great" Blatter has given the universal solution to racism in football in his infinite wisdom:

1. Player to player: Shake hands, exchange shirts, give kisses after the match
2. Fans to players: Go round the stadium, shake all the fans throwing abuses at you, kiss and make-up. Then report to FIFA afterwards...Or just bottle it up 'cos nothing will come out of it anyways.

Yeah right...
They should definitely stay on the pitch and play the game that they are played millions to do. This is effectively walking off the job. NB .I am not a white racist and have been a victim of racism. You can not let a stupid person in a stand bother you on a pitch just play the game and i report it afterwards.if you must.
to be honest i don't know what is right.

I think i lean in your direction... I'm not so much worried about the walking off the job element and money. I think is more important to not allow someone how is trying to intentionally disrupt the game achieve just that.

Its a tough one because i still tip my hat to AC and Boateng for making a stand against racism.

Blatter has no tact at all... He is so bad at communicating. I can't tell if they are corrupt but its just sad that common sense sometime is lacking in the management of such a beautiful game.

stay on the pitch. complain to the referee. referee to direct police and anti-riot squads to the stands to physically remove these idiots out of the stadium. game does not continue unless otherwise.
club or fa to ban these idiots for life; thrown in lock-up for public disorder.

Complain and nothing happens.
close the stadium for the next match. let the financial burden fall on the club so they have to find who in their fanbase is causing problems. if it's the opposing fans or if it is hard to tell, lock out both stadia.
Great response. That's why this is a non issue for stadiums here. You can even text security with the location of knobs and get them out without confronting them. The offending team should minimally lose the revenue for the gate. T shirts and demonstrations are great but money talks.
Now the mafia have a way to control the outcome of a game, send in the racists.
Blatant stupidity from Blatter
FIFA is Corrupt & Racist FACT!!! Or just blatantly corrupt racists who will continue to be like this as long as Blatter remains at the helm..
Blatter is a joke. It doesn't even matter if they walked off the pitch or not, Blatter will still not give a damn about racism in the games. The most he is going to do is give them a small fine and be done with it. Unless you're trying to do advertising like what Bendtner did, then you're gonna get a big one.
Blatter was probably one of the people in the stands dishing out the racial abuse.

Now he is using his power to ensure his targets remain on the pitch when he engages in his secretly favorite hobby.
i really dont think its that much of a secret.
he probably bribed the people around him to ensure that no one said he was there
Oh no it's been a while since this fool has opened his mouth so it was about time. I understand where people are coming from when they say Boateng shouldn't have left the pitch but what is he suppose to do just play his game like nothing is happening?
These morons have paid good money to come and see Milan which will be probably a one time thing so by Milan walking out the fans have wasted their money to see only couple of minutes of football. True it's unfair to the REAL football fans but by giving out stadium bans and fines which UEFA FIFA and FIGC are keep doing nothing will change.

Sepp Blatter should be the one banned for his continued ignorance on Racism. Mark Kampala
