Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Quotes By Chidi Anthony Opara

"Poets are the only group of people I know who see being poor as glamorous."
-CAO

Bros Chidi,

Have you considered some mandicant Orders within the Catholic Church, such as the Franciscan and Dominican Orders? If "know[ing]" means meeting any of them or reading about their spirituality, then that is cool but the Constitutions and spiritualities of these Orders glamorise poverty: being poor for them is a matter of choice not social circumstance, and it is not a matter of being "poor in spirit" (Mat5.3) but also in material things of life: not owning property.

It is more interesting for me to ask what is it that is in poetry and nowhere else that makes poets "the only group of people I know who see being poor as glamorous"? I am eager to learn more about this "Poetic Ethic and the Materiality [Spirit] of Poverty" please.

(2) 21st century African literary scholars unfortunately still over emphasize the educational aspect of poetry at the expense of the entertainment aspect.

(3) Why should only the meek inherit the earth? The quietude will be so boring.

(4) Poets are the only group of people I know who see being poor as glamorous.
