consider the latter: not only should they be aware of how they appear in the eyes of others, but how their eyes should be blinkered, hooded, disciplined, controlled, regulated, confined, blinded, shut, extirpated.
to be blinded is also to be bedazzled.
the politics of smearing entails bedazzlement, both intellectually and physically. ironically, a beautiful body that bedazzles must be the occasion for blinding the president, and, in the smearing, the public.
but this is just photoshop blinding, virtual blinding, meta-blinding, tv news-blinding. not real bedazzling, not real images even.
