Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - FUO NEWS: President Goodluck Jonathan's Visit to FUO on June 28, 2013

Well done VC,hope you will leave a legacy that will be remembered at all times in the history of University system in Nigeria. Though I  would have preferred a pix without  former Gov Alamieyesegha. His presence always leave a bad taste. But what can you do? You did not choose the visitors.

Best Wishes
Nkolika

President Goodluck Jonathan's Visit to FUO on Friday, June 28, 2013

PRESIDENT JONATHAN VISITS FEDERAL  UNIVERSITY OTUOKE

President  Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has expressed delight with facilities presently on ground at the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State.

The President made the point during his facility tour on  Friday 28th July, 2013 of the institution which formed part of his working visit to Otuoke, on a day when he also earlier commissioned the new forty-bed Otuoke Comprehensive Cottage Hospital. University facilities visited by the President were the Library (including the E-library), faculty buildings and laboratories, while interacting with staff and students.

The President  commended the administration of the Vice Chancellor, Prof, Mobolaji Aluko  ''He is one of those bright brains brought from Diaspora,  You are lucky to have him, and I hope you are happy to have him'', the President said.

The students,  speaking through Mr. Adekoya Ademola Adetokunboh (a first-year Math/Statistics student from Lagos State arbitrarily picked in one of the classes by the President to speak) commended the institution and the Vice-Chancellor for all that they had been doing to give the students  a sound education and comfortable living and learning environment, but solicited for the provision of more learning materials (including laptops) and hostel accommodation.  He also complained about the high cost of living at Otuoke.

The president in his response to the students noted that like them, he was a pioneer student at the University of Port Harcourt,  and understood their concerns.  He however stated that the facilities he had seen around were much better than what he had as a pioneer student.  With respect to the students's request for adequate accommodation and affordable standard of living in the university community he promised to create an enabling environment for learning by providing more hostels and distribution of laptops to all pioneer students.  He felt that the pressure for housing by students and staff may be contributing to the high cost of living, but that he would appeal to his community to be more understanding.

In his remarks during the presidential visit, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko commended the President for supporting the school while soliciting for increased funding (particularly of the overhead category),  as well as early and complete release of the budgeted capital funds to ensure effective operation of the institution.  (The Vice-Chancellor later had a private session with the President at the Bayelsa Presidential Lodge in Yenagoa to re-emphasize these points.)

In separate remarks, Prof. Aluko,  who had earlier embarked on a familiarization visit to the new forty-bed Otuoke Comprehensive Cottage Hospital,  noted that the facility is a welcome development expected to augment health services already existing in the university and in the community.  He added that the university will share a symbiotic relationship with the hospital to provide quality health services to staff and students of FU Otuoke.

Dignitaries who were in President Jonathan's entourage included: the Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, his deputy, Rear Admiral John Jonah (Rtd), and Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike. Others are Senators Clever Ikisikpo, and Emmanuel Paulker, some serving  Federal and State lawmakers, Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Power, Ambassador Boladei Igali, the Special Adviser to the President on Research and Development, Oronto Douglas among others.  At hand in the university were staff Deans Prof. Bio Nyananyo and Philomena Ejele of Science and Humanities/Social Science Faculties respectively, Ag. Bursar Atombara Ombu, Principal Librarian Hudron Kari and other university officials.
