The situation is actually much worse than reported, especially in Africa where non-bribery forms of corruption (e.g., embezzlement of public funds by high-hanking civil servants and politicians, as well as the non-performance of government contracts) are pervasive. Thus, while bribery has become endemic and represents a significant obstacle to economic growth-enhancing activities, it is important to note that "grand corruption" (theft of large amounts of public resources) and large-scale environment degradation add to Africa's descend into economic and political hell.
