thank you for forwarding this speech by soyinka. it is compelling to read it; and to imagine him speaking in Freedom Park, the one place in lagos to which i was taken where i had a few beers, could relax and breathe in the air, and reflect on the name of that park, the space it offered. i am still disturbed at the violence that took awoonor away, the awefulness of it. soyinka wants to call for a space where we can disagree without killing each other, without assuming we have all the access to truth, and others none. we can call that space freedom park, and this listserv as well is a kind of freedom park for us to disagree, to debate, or to congratulate each other. that makes it a community park, a virtual freedom park worth remembering and feeling good about.
