Salutations to all ASUU loyalists on this group and everywhere.
We have come this distance over the decades through much sweat and suffering, through denigration and starvation, through sacrifice and total commitment.
Without ASUU, without the power of a unified, nationally centralised ASUU, Nigerian academics would have become a most wretched lot.
Whatever our limitations, we must uphold pride in our heritage, in our historic struggle for dignity, in the struggle to be recognised as human though some felt our humanity should be compromised because we were or are academics in Nigerian universities.
That negativity I just described is the picture I encountered when I became an academic at the University of Benin, in 1990, and served for some years as Assistant Secretary of University of Benin, ASUU branch, with now Professor Ogo Ofuani as Secretary, Dr. Dimowo as chairman and now Professor Kadiri as Treasurer.
Since then, the struggle to secure and maintain the dignity and humanity of the Nigerian academic has been a constant war, with battle after battle.
Truly, there is a critical need to address issues of self accountability among academics in relation to personal values and institutional management as well as serious long term strategising on how best to work within an epileptic political climate.
