But what is roiling Washington, DC, is what they see as the unnecessary undiplomatic outbursts of the Nigerian Ambassador to the U.S. Prof. Ade Adefuye, who on the 11th November, publicly lambasted the U.S. for its refusal to sell Nigeria the weapons needed to deliver what he termed "the killer punch" against Boko Haram.
There appears to be a cloud of uncertainty in the relationship between the United States of America and Nigeria, Africa's most populous country. The tension between the two so-called "best-friends" countries has become palpable in the face of utterances and actions that have played out in the public arena. All this has occurred because of the surging Boko Haram insurgency which, since 2009, has claimed more than 13,000 lives in the North-East part of Nigeria, and shows no signs of abetting, and in fact escalated with the abduction of more than 200 school girls from Chibok in the Bornu State of Nigeria. When the Boko Haram abducted the girls, the U.S. was one of the first countries that offered assistance to Nigeria to locate and rescue the school girls. According to the U.S. Department of State, America's assistance has come in the form of sharing intelligence with the Nigerian Army, training a battalion of the Army, and holding several high level meetings. Other countries have also offered assistance.
