BLACKS IN EUROPE
The presence of Africans and people of African descent in Europe can be traced back to the 16th century. European countries with a colonial past have led the trend in the increasing presence of people from Africa and its Diaspora in their midst. Films about people of color in Europe have also been made for quite some time to document and illustrate the lives of these men and women who have impacted the European landscape.
ADIFF is pleased to present films from the UK, France, Finland and Italy that tell different stories about black people in Europe in very diverse ways.
* Gripping and provocative Finish dramedy Heart of a Lion by Dome Karukosi about a Neo-Nazi who falls for a woman with a black son from a previous marriage. Heart of a Lion has very intense moments as the viewer is exposed to the Neo-Nazi movement and the violence that is central in their lifestyle. Director Dome Karukosi will be in attendance for a Q&A after some of the screenings. * Hold Back (Rengaine) by Rachid Djaïdani explores the taboo subject of the interaction between North Africans and Africans from the South of the continent. The love story between Sabrina and Dorcy is threatened by the conflict that it generates as Sabrina is of Algerian descent and has forty brothers who, for the most part, do not see her relationship with Dorcy who is black and Christian as acceptable. Hold Back is a film that exposes the viewer to the tensions that are prevalent in the African community in France as the film deals with intra-racism, sexual orientation intolerance and religious differences. Lead actor Slimane Dazi will attend the screening. More info here<http://nyadiff.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=d68a26ccabe85d27fd88d5768&id=701da24d0c&e=df7a1554a5>.
* The Mark Of The Angels (Miserere) by Afro-French director Sylvain White is a thriller with two remarkable French actors, Gerard Depardieu and Joey Starr, a former Rap singer now in front of the camera. They play the role of two cops who pair up to uncover the dubious activities of an international organization with roots in Nazi Germany. More info here.<http://nyadiff.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d68a26ccabe85d27fd88d5768&id=285d94bc19&e=df7a1554a5>
* Steps To Liberty by Rokhaya Diallo and The Glass Ceiling by Yamina Benguigi are films that, looking at different moments in the history of France, deal head on with the race issue. Both filmmakers use the Civil Rights Movement in the USA as a necessary frame of reference to contextualize the situation of people of color in France and the challenges they face.
Ms. Benguigui tells us the story of French people of African descent who believe in the values that are at the roots of the French democracy but who, because they have the wrong surname, see their lives shattered by a system that does not clearly show its face.
Ms. Diallo comes back with the same subject 10 years later, but this time the conversation is more direct as she follows a delegation of young African-Americans who visited France after the election of Barack Obama. The young people in the delegation are very misinformed about the situation of Africans and people of African descent in France, so the visit to the country is an eye opener as they discover the common issues that black people deal with in both countries.
Steps to Liberty and The Glass Ceiling are part of the program France and the Race Issue, a selection of films about race relations in France. Ms. Diallo, a journalist and activist co-founder of the Les Indivisibles, an organization establish to help fight against racism and stereotypes in France, will be on hand for a debate after the screening of her film.

* Fevers by Hicham Ayouch is about Benjamin, a 13 years old Beur (North-African descendant born in France) who is at war against everything and everybody including himself. He is insolent, confrontational and disrespectful of all that his North-African family respects and believes in. Lead actor Slimane Dazi will attend the screening. From Italy, Thanks Mr. President by Matteo Bennatil is the story of two sisters from Nigeria whose desire to meet the Italian President. This is a documentary about immigration, the dream of a new life and race relations in Italy.
