Briefs About the Program:
Leveraging Africa Diaspora Capital and Private Sector Investment  for Africa's Development.

Against the backdrop to foster a peaceful, prosperous Africa and  positive climates for investors and non-governmental organizations, the program seeks to maximize the capacity of Africa Diaspora and facilitate collaborations toward these ends.

Accordingly, the creative program will highlight available resources; address policies; identify ways to implement viable  solutions/programs that have been discussed in the Civil Society and adopted by African governments; explore opportunities; sensitize the indigenous mastery of Africa's development; and promote business relations with foreign partners.

The substantial cash flow and investments from Africa Diaspora to Africa are  important, steady, and growing sources of funds than foreign aid. These include the contributions of home-town, alumni,  and  professional associations that undertake developments ranging from micro-financing to development of educational and health infrastructure.

Partnering with, and support for, innovative and sustainable businesses  owned by Africa Diaspora entrepreneurs with demonstrable connections and commitments in Africa promotes high impact growth.

Africa offers more than is known through  the media and limited outlets. While barriers to  development are real, it is also real that there are ongoing and  significant shifts in economic fundamentals, favorable business climates,  and irreversible economic turn-around for  Africa, including  intra-African developments that boost productivity, efficiencies, and competitive advantages.

It is prudent for African governments and private  sectors to realistically engage the  Diaspora  resourcefulness in order to maximize outcomes. The program also will sensitize the goals articulated by African Finance Ministers and external opportunities with foreign investors.  There is a
" take-away " for every participant.

Format

The format of the program will comprise of stimulating plenary discussions, exhibitions, customized round-table discourse, and networking intended to provide substantive insights on the theme or opportunity. Participants will have overview information, trade and tourism brochures on various African countries and also viable Africa Diaspora organizations undertaking developments in Africa. Business owners are encouraged to bring their cards and information to distribute.

Who should attend?
Civil Society advocates, business owners and leaders, bankers, NGO operators, government officials, embassy representatives, journalists, researchers, academics and other professionals, current and potential investors in Africa would appreciate the insightful and substantive  exchange, which is not normally  experienced through the traditional and usual medium.

African Union-Economic Commission for Africa  (ECA) Conference of Ministers: March 25-31, 2015.

The  8th Annual Joint  African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration and the ECA Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development took place in Addis Ababa from March 25-31, 2015. The UN Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union Commission also hosted the second Caucus of African Central Bank Governors in the margins.

The call for Africa's economic self reliance characterized major perspectives. Ethiopia's Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Abraham Tekeste, emphasized the essence: Tap Our Own Wealth to Finance Africa's Development.

The presentation from President Paul Kagame of Rwanda expanded on the premise:    Africa: Let's Chart Our Own Plan.

The week-long conference was attended by Africa's M inisters of Finance, Planning and Economic Development as well as heads of state from the East African Community - Ethiopia's Prime Minister Haliemariam Dessalegn, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya.

Local Development and Constituency Engagement Program

Maryland Senator Jamie Raskin was Keynote Speaker at the Voice and Valor:  Martin Luther King Builder and Patron Award Dinner and Appreciation of Black History Month on Saturday February 28, 2015 at the University of Maryland, Nyumburu Cultural Center:

Building the Vital and Vibrant Transnational Continental African  Community
in the Diaspora with
           Asset Based Community Development (ABCD)

A BCD is a  strategy  for sustainable community-driven development as opposed to over-reliance on external assistance or dependency to address development that is relevant to the population. Beyond the mobilization of the particular community, ABCD strives to link micro-assets to the macro-environment. The appeal is based on the premise that communities can drive the development process themselves by identifying and mobilizing existing, but often unrecognized assets, and consequently respond to and create  socio-economic opportunities for the community.

ABCD builds on the assets/capacities that already exist in the community; not concentrate on their needs or deficiencies as the starting point.

Understandably, it is unrealistic to  undertake ABCD  as a   national entity or individual organization in building a vital community in the Diaspora, which requires both public and private sectors dynamics in local jurisdictions in the US.

First, the process  identifies the assets of persons, associations, and then institutions, including public entities, in order to  mobilize, work together and build on the identified assets of all involved. Then the identified assets from persons,  associations  and institutions are matched with people or groups who have an interest or need in that asset.

The strategic key is to begin to use what is already in the community. Are you an asset or can you help in identifying one - whether an individual, organization, business , or even public official or institution?

Let us get it done. We hope to see some of you, the assets,  on April 17, 2015. Please, do not forget to bring your cards or information to network for outcomes.
