there is a larger point to be made here. when any of us says, we get our info, reliable info, from the bbc or nyt or human rights watch or whatever, what we should be saying is that we rely on a particular reporter. there have been good and bad reporters for all these organizations. even amnesty blew it in iraq, way back with the first invasion.
i try to recognize who is strong, like howard french or the guy with the japanese name who wrote out of africa for the times, (starts w an n), he was terrific. many reporters are beginners and know little. and also, the bbc report on rwanda, recently, was one of the worst i have ever seen--the controversial one that relied on an idiot professor making idiotic claims about the genocide.
there are two issues: the quality of the reportage which is a function of the individual reporter or editor, and the ideological bias of the organ. we all have our preferences. i am very influenced by some sources, like the guardian or by Informed Commentary (juan cole); i am more skeptical about the huffington post which can be injudicious. it isn't just the ideological leaning that matters; it is actual judicious judgments of individuals, and the u.s. press rotates out reporters so the newbees need to come up to speed, whereas the french or brits tend to leave there reporters in africa for a long period, people like stephen smith who reported for the Liberation for decades.
