dear oa
i couldn't first agree and then disagree more.
of course the chinese are operating around the world for their economic
advantage--benefit. why else would they invest? at first, that is what
you say. but in the end you say it is not about economic advantage. that
makes no sense to me.
if you want to say, in addition to the economics, they do not care about
the politics, then i agree. but they can't get the economic benefit
unless they satisfy the political demands of the countries they forge
agreements with. that's the whole point.
if you want to add, european countries intervene in africa, creating
subordinate states, then i think we have a more interesting argument,
because the interventions over democracy and human rights are more mixed
messages, if you will.
if you want to argue, chinese investments are ultimately better for
africa because there is no price to be paid, it is just business, then
you have to agree that south sudan, for instance, can remain an endless
killing field as far as the chinese are concerned, as long as they get
their oil.

Unlike the Western model, China tries not to be a factor in the political affairs and development of the host country, including regime change for example. She does not seek political domination of host countries to garner and maintain economic advantage. Hers is a partnership model however imperfect it is. This is a significant difference
