Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Today's Quote

That's very good news!  Indeed, half a drop is better than no oil at all. At least you can't complain like Golda Meir.

As the nation building continues, hopefully,  Imo, Abia State, Anambra and the other Igbo states will also be producing the indigenous qualified manpower needed to run the oil and gas industry, such as petrochemical engineers etc., so that they don't have to import more foreign expertise than is needed.

There is oil in Imo (2 LGAs) and Abia States (2 LGAs) and efforts to get some production going in Anambra. Good production rates but not in same league with the core States of Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa.

This statement is beautifully crafted, balanced on the surface, deceptively logical and at the same time riddled with ambiguities for which reason it has to be unravelled.  Moving from abstraction to practicalities, on a closer examination of whatever intended meaning/s what's implied here, which national obstinacy – the Federalist nation? Biafran nationalism?  And what are "the puny efforts at unity"?

In the words of Ikemba Ojukwu, in examining this statement any further we must "visit the very foundations of Nigeria" back to 1914.

Given that

  1. The various ethnic fragments of the Federation are glued together by the constitution.

  2. At the last national conference the dissolution of the Federation of Nigeria was a non-starter, was not on the agenda, and was not up for discussion because it is intended that Nigeria continues to remain intact under the constitutional umbrella. Presumably, there are advantages in staying together, as a big country.

  3. The unequal distribution of natural resources (for instance not a drop of oil to be found in Igbo-land could be one of the compelling reasons for some people wanting to stay under the federal umbrella…

"Stiff-necked obstinacy" (like an illiterate goat's), is the persistence/ obstinacy mired in a constitution which denies Biafra's cry of "Let my people go"?

Only asking.

Sweden and Norway were once in a union - the union was disbanded in 1905--- and I regret to say that now it is Norway that has all the oil prosperity…

We Sweden

Oga Chidi,
On this one, I fully agree with you: Why has the Biafrian Question refused to die in spite of the attempt by the Nigerian state to violently pull it under the national carpet? All modern states police their territories and put down all manner of antagonisms to their authority. Yet, rumbles of Biafria is still volatile forty five years after the war ended.

Why? Of course, the Nigerian state,  as is, will not attempt to find an answer to that pointed question. And that stiff neck national obstinacy is what will always ensure that our unyielding diversity will always confound the puny efforts at unity.

The question is not whether the idea of Biafra is right or wrong, the question rather is; why have the idea refused to die?
