You couldn't tell from the lamentations of folks but many Africans are writing and reading and sharing generously. There is not a single morning I wake up when I don't get something sent to me by friends and total strangers to read. Many of the suggested readings are essays, works of fiction, etc. that someone fancied and wanted me to enjoy. And I enjoy every one of them; I am blessed with friends with eclectic reading tastes.
I also get lots of manuscripts, draft essays and short stories from young people who earnestly ask my opinions about their works. I wish they would stop; I am leery of imposing my views on someone else's tastes. Most of what I get is truly good, but I have my biases as to what I enjoy and so I worry that if I don't like a manuscript, an aspiring writer would view it as a dim reflection on his or her worth as a writer. Nothing could be further from the truth. Ignore me. Just write. Please.

Oya, read the rest of my rant...
