Hello Everyone,
Please find a book that was published by one of my Professors in Graduate School, Professor Joachim J. Savelsberg, at the University of Minnesota. He is a Professor of Sociology and Law. Though not my adviser I had a close working relationship with him because I was his teaching assistant and we connected well. He is a very kind person that cares about others. His wife does research on Cameroon and her book which examines the immigration of Cameroonians to Germany is coming out later this year.
Professor Savelsberg decided to make his book "open access." I was surprised about that given the way intellectual property is a huge issue especially under neoliberalism. Here is what he wrote in response to my surprise:
"Yes, part of the reason for me to agree to an open access-online edition (which comes without royalties) was to make the book accessible to those in the global south who would normally not have access. But now I fear that those I had in mind will not learn about its availability. Would you have ideas that would help spread the news (and the link) to African colleagues with related interests? Might you be able to send the link to some colleagues in Africa whom you know?"
Below is a weblink to the book. Please circulate it to as many African scholars who are interested in this subject as possible. I downloaded it myself and will get it bound on Tuesday. The issue of African scholars accessing materials that are easily available in the West is an important one. I met one provost of a private school in Ghana some years ago who expressed concern that though there are many books published by Diaspora Africans in the West, many African scholars are priced out in terms of being able to buy them. This issue also came up during a conference I attended in Abuja in November last year. While working with the Journal of Third World Studies, one of the things that inadvertently took a lot of my time because I volunteered to do so, was to patiently scan relevant materials and send it to scholars in Africa who sent in articles for publication but their coverage of the literature was somewhat provincial.
If in the future, someone in this forum wants to lead a project where a book will be published (as a donation) to address an area of scholarly research in Africa but to be published in Africa for the sake of making it accessible to many in the continent, I am willing to participate it.
In this respect Professor Savelsberg is trying to help in his own small way to ameliorate the problem of access among African scholars. Please find the information about the book below:
