USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: [africanworldforum] RE: #3 VIDEO: Nigeria’s Interior minister, Dambazau, converts SSS officer to “shoe shiner” - Premium Times Nigeria

John Ebohon:

First, may your tribe increase again!  I am even fearful that your tribe might explode in population if I keep writing so.....

Moving on....

Second, I am happy to inform you that after a rigorous accreditation exercise in November 2015, ALL the TWELVE academic programs at the Federal University Otuoke have now been accredited as conveyed to the VC in a letter last week, meaning that all our first set of students who will graduate in July 2016 will be eligible for NYSC deployment, and for regular employment afterwards.  That is what I consider my greatest achievement so far, in addition to the successful negotiation of the addition of a twenty-five-building Skills Acquisition and Enterpreneurship Center handed over to the University by the Ministry of Niger-Delta Affairs in May 2015. Accreditation is a formal stamp of approval of our academic programs - which in time will also still improve.

What about staff and student numbers?

When the University was announced in February 2011, there were only two members of staff announced - the Registrar and myself - and no students.  So there were two more staff than students, a student to staff ratio of ZERO or a staff to student ratio of INFINITY.  I presume that presented a major headache to Vin Otuonye and his ilk?

Our university doors opened to 282 students in October 2012, but one month before that date, in September 2012, just before school started, there were about  449 total staff (of which there were 232 junior staff - security, cleaners, gardners, porters, etc.), manning four campus areas (2 off-campus hostels, and two on-campus sections) with a total of 15 buildings and two faculties (12 departments)  on 15-hectares of land.   So again, there were more staff than students. Today, we have about 2,200 students, about 1,900 staff manning/securing/learning/teaching in about 50 buildings on three campuses and in four faculties (20 departments) and a Skills Acquisition and Enterpreneurship Center, and  a developing (but yet sandy) 12-kilometer road network on about 40 hectares of land- which we hope will be all be tarred if and when the NDDC does the project that it should have completed over two years ago now. (The entire campus is 200 hectares.)   Academic staff size has increased to almost 210, but but senior junior non-academic staff have also increased significantly because of administrative, security and cleaning needs - but not once have we NOT been able to pay staff, as provided for in our annual national budgets, where we  always spell out our staff mix - with justifications.  We have also submitted our nominal rolls to the Federal Character Commission (FCC) - with justifications.

And there you have it.

The argument to be had with Vin, in my view, is an economic one. Vin should appreciate the significance of fixed costs and variable costs when starting any venture. Fixed costs are those that you incur whether or not you have started production, in this case, the costs that Otuoke University has to incur with or without students. The university for example has to have a library, librarian, and library assistance together with similar critical services that must be put in place ready for a take-off. This period is known as the short-run and characterised by excess capacity to which the university must grow and absorb.

Thus, the fact that there are more staffs than students is consistent with a new set-up, this ratio will decline with time. In particular, some of these services are indivisible, you either have them or you do not, and it would be difficult to bear, in case of any eventuality, to argue the absence of a robust system on staff-student ratio. Finally, I disagree that Otuoke is the only university in this position.

Comment:

 Vin Cool Breeze Otuonye,

You asserted that FUO is (not was) one of the few universities you know that seem to have MORE staff than students. I challenged you for this assertion.

You then supplied the current figures of its students and staff as follows: Students population: 1040. Academic Staff: 650. Administrative Staff: 360. And you ended up asking me whether you were right or wrong?

Since by my calculation, 1040 is greater than 1000 by 40, so you are totally wrong by asserting that the University's Students' population is (not was) MORE than its staff population. This is the simple truth. And I told you so.

You have now come up to say that you hate debating with me. It adds up that he who hates to debate with Emeka Okala hates to hear and listen to the truth.

Therefore Vin Cool Breeze Otuonye is allergic to truth. QED.

Vin,

The first thing I leaned about us on Nigerian forums is that if you scratch almost all progressive Nigerians deep enough, you will find the same thing; moral filth. And Bolaji and Emeka are no exception.

It used to be that this common layer with most Nigerians was tribalism - as it is with you, Ayo, Bolaji and others - but, today, accepted invidious corruption makes most Nigerians chameleons as soon as the subject is too close to home.

I had high hopes that a Buhari election will change this fundamentally but I am really unsure of this at this time.

By this, I mean that if Buhari had insisted on appointing only individuals like him or close to his kind, the current Minister of Education would have long corrected this problem of the new generation corruption and opportunistic VCs that Jonathan imposed on the country.

This is true for almost all other Jonathan appointments, such as that near illiterate Bode George's toy, Rolli, as the head of NDLEA - a position previously held by a professor of pharmacology!

But guys like you are not helping the matter with your lack of support for the president's desire to redirect our society.

Vincent Cool Breeze Otuonye,

It depends on when Bolaji made the statement. Are you sure you are not quoting a statement he made when the Uni was still in its rudimentary stage?

Make your investigation. Let me make some correction I don't mean to say the staff population is more than the student population but the staff population is close to the student population. I believe it is Aluko himself that put fort that information here not too long ago. The difference between the staff and student population of Federal University Otuoke was very minimal that I wondered then, why employ this large number of people for such a student body/population? Though the student population is more than the staff population but it is not by such a large margin that you see in universities.

Comment:

Vin Cool Breeze Otuonye,

Do you mean that the numerical strength of the staff of the FUO is more than the students' population? Are you serious? You see, what you are saying in other words is that, if the students' population of FUO is, say 5000, the numerical strength of the staff is more than that figure. Do you want your audience to believe you?

I'll make my investigation first before using what you have said as a point of reference in any of my works, because some of you are terrible liars. I don't want to destroy my work quoting what is not true!

Vin Cool Breeze Otuonye,

The last time I checked the Federal University Otuoke - an institution of which Bolaji is the VC is not operating as an American Uni in Otuoke and, Otuoke is not a state in the US.

So, if the Nigerian system provides its VCs with driver and SSS and, if Bolaji is a VC in Nigeria, why does it sound superfluous to you that he is provided with the same facilities? I want to know!

Do you all see the reason why these folks die for political appointment? Do you see why Nigeria cannot get it right? The "big man" psychology and sense of entitlement!

SSS, driver, PA all at the beck and call of a VC. So, why should a governor not have 10 each of such officers? Then, why should these officers paid to do defined duties not be converted to bag carriers, domestic servants and lately shoe shiners?

When I came here to say that these folks  will go to any length to get public appointments some say it is bad belle. Well, I will continue to say it as it is.

Rotimi Fashakin:

Don't mind these wailing wailers ....they are using all means necessary to fight back, this time against Dambazzau!

Please come with me....

I have had the driver attached to me - and SSS and PA too - "shine my shoes" in public a number of times  - and this is how/why, at least on these occasions:

I had a tour of my university grounds (1) with the Minister of Education/ES Tetfund (2) with my Council members, after which there was supposed to be a meeting in a university office room.  Coming back from the tour of the university, there was mud and sand all over the shoes of the members of our touring groups.

In fact, before alighting from the various vehicles, the drivers and SSS and PAs had armed themselves with shoe shine cloth, and as we alighted, they gave quick brushes to all our shoes, so that we did not carry mud and sand into the offices.

So let them tell me: what is wrong with that? Should we have sent all our shoes to our shoemakers?  Or to our house-helps?  Oh, it would have been quite "humble" of us to clean the shoes ourselves....yes, that would have shown us as servant-leaders?

Too much hypocrisy.....

Bolaji Aluko

Shaking his head

PS:  How do we know that it is merely shining his shoes the SSS man is doing?  Suppose he is helping him to tie his un-loosed laces?  Is it not part of his "security detail" to ensure that he does not trip on anything, including on his own shoe laces?  So what is wrong with an SSS attached to a superior assisting in (1)  tying his laces  (2) opening a car door  (3) holding a document (4) removing a fly off a shirt?  Oh...it is the "public" aspect of it?

Hypocrisy.....
