USA Africa Dialogue Series - REFERENDUM IS CHEAPER MEANS TO RESOLVE NATIONALITY & SOVEREIGNTY MATTERS - says Ohuabunwa [ On National and Ethnic Self Determination]

Britain is conducting a second referendum for its people in less than 2 years. In September 2014, the Scots voted in a referendum in order to ascertain whether majority of their folks would wish to remain as part of the United Kingdom (UK) or to go it on their own. Today, the totality of the British electorate is headed to the polls in order to vote in a referendum to decide whether the UK government should pull out of the European Union (EU) or not. Yes, the stakes are indeed high. Outcome of today's vote can have far-reaching impact on the once world's superpower that had built a global empire of unprecedented size and wealth. But still, the Britons are smart enough to know that even more risky is opting for use of force or imposition to suppress the will of the people.

Sam Ohuabunwa's latest article enjoins the Nigerian political elite to borrow from the lead of Nigeria's creator and colonial ruler by throwing the vexatious matter of sovereignty and nationality of the country's constituent parts to the electoral court of a referendum. This sagacious counsel runs counter to the official position taken by the incumbent Buhari administration which has unwisely opted for arbitrary incarceration and extrajudicial killings in attempt to suppress the quest for self-determination among many interest groups who feel entrapped in a unitary Nigerian state since the past 50 years. National greatness is never attained through imposition by force of arms. The article's author asserts that the Referendum course is much cheaper and its outcome more durable. He is very correct. Do you think so too?

Possible Exit of Britain from the European Union & Lessons for Nigeria - by Sam Ohuabunwa, OFR

All over Nigeria, there are agitations for self-determination while some are asking for sovereignty. Currently the most prominent are the agitations for Biafra by MASSOB & the IPOD, with their horde of supporters. There is the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) with their variants asking for the Republic of Niger Delta and whatever is left after all the oil wells and pipelines have been bombed or ruined. There is another group which seems to be an amalgamation of the two tendencies called the Lower Nigeria Congress (LNC) whose geographical territory extends to the Middle-belt of Nigeria. This group is speaking essentially about self-determination which does not necessarily mean secession. In the South West and middle belt, there are dormant volcanoes which can become active anytime. I do not quite know if the technical defeat of Boko Haram is the end of that chapter. ……………………read more
