Dear Richard,

I just want to react to one issue in your mail and that is the one dealing with Nigeria's role in the world.
On CNN, BBC, etc, Japan advertises itself by showcasing what its armed forces are doing in South Sudan under UN flag. .Since 1960 Nigeria has been involved in over 20 peacekeeping operations and performed creditably. Nigeria does not advertise this.
The Emirates advertise their medical assistance to developing countries in the international media. Nigeria has over 1500 technical volunteers in over 30 countries in Africa, Caribbean and the Pacific . Nigeria does not advertise this.
Nigeria is the only African country with 3 satellites in space with one of them totally designed by Nigerian engineers. Nigeria does not advertise this.
What about the achievements of the  Nigerians in the Diaspora: the design wonder engineer at General Motors, Dr. Olutoye who operated on an unborn child and the baby was born safely, Obama's deputy National Security Adviser etc.
Yes the warts are there but that is not the total story.
Africans have a saying: if you continue to call your compound a dump, don't be surprised if people bring their rubbish there.

This is going to be the theme of my 2016 Convocation Lecture at the University of Ibadan on November 16. I will share the text later.

Best wishes.

Dear Ayo:

Thank you for the summary of the lecture by my long-time colleague, Professor Ladipo Adamolekun. I am sure my other dear colleague, Professor Abiola Irele, will be provided the full text of the lecture at Lead City University.

This is a troubling time, compounded by the outcome of the American presidential election. The generation to which Adamolekun, Irele, Jeyifo, Osofisan, and I belong is one in which we expected Nigeria to become a leader, not only of the Black and African world, but of peoples who underwent the ravages of imperialism, colonialism, and racial oppression.

Somehow, the occupiers of political office today forget what the struggle was about. "Seek ye first the political kingdom, and all things will be added unto you." So Nkrumah declared. Instead, as Jeyifo intones, we have acquired predatory republics, even in South Africa which so majestically threw off the shackles of apartheid.

As I learned about the early morning raid of the residences of justices, I thought of the noble Justice Akinola Aguda and his leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. What would he think of the state of the judiciary today? He once declared that every Nigerian government had succeeded in one regard: creating more millionaires than its predecessors. What would be say today?

Would a Sovereign National Conference hew a path out of this predicament? Perhaps, but much more is needed. I hope this discussion will continue. Nigeria is slipping from view in world affairs, except for its deepening problems.

Sincerely,

Richard
