Good greetings Prof. Aluko:
According to publicly available records, Ola Rotimi was born in Sapele. His father was Samuel Gladstone Enitan Rotimi (Yoruba); and his mother was Dorcas Adolae Oruene Addo (Ijaw). How does that make him Itshekiri?
Sabella AbiddeKenneth:Tribalism, ethnicism or chauvinism are the pejorative meanings of "parapo". Unity, unification, coming-togetherness are its good form.I am Ekiti Yoruba. The Yoruba word "parapo" fully entered into Yoruba/Nigerian consciousness when Ekiti Parapo soldiers united to contend against/defeat an Oyo military hegemony (from.near Falola's Ibadan backyard) in what is claimed to be the world's longest Civil War - actually a series of Ekiti Paraiso Wars (1770 - 1886), which was finally stopped by British colonial mediation. So in one sense, you can see why "parapo" is positive to me, and jumps as a negative to TF!However, in modern Nigerian parlance, "parapo" is almost invariably used in its pejorative sense among the Yoruba _-or against the Yoruba - to indicate a clannish propensity. In the present Afolayan-Emeagwali interview context, when a Yoruba Adesina Afolayan mentions largely Yoruba artistes (such as Ola Baligun) as probably predating the Nollywood Era, an Igbo Biko Agozino says that that is "parapo". . Or when Afolayan states that a Yoruba Kelani's films mark a new Nollywood in terms of good story and cinematography, biko, that is "parapo" to Biko!Note of course that Nollywood is currently (has always been?) dominated by Igbo directors and films, so there is intense sensitivity and rivalry thereaboutsFinally, I am always amused when people like Kenneth think that they have known everything about Nigeria's cleave lines - only to discover new ones out of the blues _ like "parapo"!Well, there you have it!Bolaji AlukoShaking his headPS: I was part of the pre-Nollywood scene, acting in Ola Rotimi's 1973/74 stage play as well as film Ovonramwen. Does that qualify for honorable mention? Or the Hubert Ogundiran and Duro Ladipo epic stage plays and widely distributed videos of the 60s and 70s. Do those qualify? These are all Yoruba name artistes, although Ola Rotimi was really Itshekiri. Am I too being "parapo"?--

Oga Biko,
There is no "parapo" factor in Auteuring Nollywood at all. I only attempted to complicate the periodization issue in the interview but did not do any such thing in the volume. I think you will find it a beautiful experimentation with the auteur theory/philosophy angle.
I love the essay you wrote with the Baudrillardian angle. Nice nice!

Thanks for sharing, Gloria. Ken must be disappointed that you did not film any trash in the background though you chose a posh part of Lagos for this purpose.
I look forward to reading Shina's book too though his choice to focus on his parapo may limit the appeal of the book on a national phenomenon.
Gloria should be cautious about ingoring postmodernist theory given that Derrida creditef his African cultural backgroynd with inspiring his decobstruction discourse. The saying that the author is dead simply means long live the critic because the author cannot dictate the reception.
Here is an essay that I wrote on Nollywood highlighting its technological inovations and taking Baudrillard seriously

Ken,
That is a real
good compliment - coming from a renowned specialist in
the field of African cinema.
The Lagos shots
were done around 8.00am on a Sunday . That is why the
streets were
clear. This gave me the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of
Lagos from another angle.
Special
commendation to Governors Tinubu, Fashola and Ambode for
facilitating such a
clean and
beautiful city.
The interview
took place at Maryland, Lagos about a week before.
Dr. Afolayan
had one minute notice!!!!

Nollywood made by our own Gloria and adeshina afolayan.
Gloria is being modest in not telling us, but I just had
time to start viewing it and loved it.
Everyone needs to click on the link
and enjoy these two smart people discussing the wonderful
topic, and enjoy the long takes of lagos in the
process
